His legend is other-worldly and now, in his 95th year, that's where John Glenn has gone.

An authentic hero and genuine American icon, Glenn died this afternoon surrounded by family at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus after a remarkably healthy life spent almost from the cradle with Annie, his beloved wife of 73 years, who survives.

His head was always in the clouds, which is good for an aviator/astronaut, but no so much for politics.

He was one of my childhood heroes. I had a record of the radio communications of his Mercury flight, which I would play while acting out the events with the 4' Mercury-Atlas model I built. Played that poor record til the grooves smoothed out.

Condolences to his family.

R.I.P., John.

Our class had the TV on thru-out his 3 orbits...  Only schools had PBS then.  I remember the-curve-of-the-Earth outside his capsule.  Because of that, his mission didn't seem as scary as Shepard's and Grissom's.  But Glenn's parade and fanfare were a lot bigger.  I eventually realized he was doing most of the navigating himself.  The gravity-position sensor was being invented in real-time.  By him

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air... .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

— John Gillespie Magee, Jr

Godspeed, John Glenn.

He did quite a lot during his time on our soil. He really lived. I'll leave it at that.

Had one of those WTH moments the other day...  A crawler on the bottom of MSNBC, while I waited in the lobby to get into a site...

OBAMA:  John spent his life breaking barriers.

An American hero dies, and MSNBC, so politically correct, quotes Obama, "John spent his life breaking barriers" - (liberal narrative filter at work)

The first Bald Dude in Space?   I bet they started by listing his friendship with Bill Clinton, going to bat for him in the senate.   Sigh!

RIP John Glenn, it takes alot of BALLS to be the first in anything, risking your life the way you did - you have my respect and honor, sir.

I believe Glenn was one of the "Keating 7" along with McCain.
