Ok, there comes a point where for the sake of discussion it is necessary to categorize Americans. Cultures, geographic considerations, and economics are just a few ways where we can learn from analyzing groups differently. Lets not get all PC on this forum.

People only think it's PC to call dark skinned Americans 'African Americans' because that is what most in the liberal crowd call them. If you must put different Americans into groups based on race, for the purpose of discussion, blacks or African Americans is appropriote.

Yes, hence the word American in the term African American. But as I said before, when catorgorizing  different Americans into groups based on race, it makes sense to put African in front ot American for Africa is obviously the place where these people's ancestor's came from.
