That to me? Speaks volumes about his character.
Trump seems to be a master at deception and planning, sleight of hand and keeping the narrative out of the hands of the leftist media.
Remember the so called bump stocks ban? Never happened, but by mentioning it, he stole the media thunder.
Just like every issue that's come up, Trump tells the left what they want to hear and they don't know how to react and move on.

I will agree that he has given a strong impression / facade of your exact description.

I just think that somebody with his previous ethics and identity, accomplishments and reputation, would not suddenly become this.

So my thoughts for now would be that it's a false impression, cultivated purposefully.  Toward a greater end.

I could be wrong on that too.  The closer we get to letting Mueller get too far in damaging / derailing Trump, and affecting the fall elections against Trump, the worse I feel about my hopes.  We are in the window right now, and it's not a large one.
