Title: Important forum message - please read
Post by: taxed on October 11, 2017, 05:17:37 PM
Please don't click on links that are shortened or truncated.  If the link is shortened, click on the "Report to moderator" link at the bottom right of the OP.

Another way to approach it is if you can't tell the publication from the domain name, and can't tell what the article is (should be) about from the URL, then don't click on it.

If you have any questions, then ask.  I'm going to sticky this for a few days to make sure everyone reads it.  Someone can post malicious link obfuscated by the URL shortening services, then say something like "Wow!  Bill caught in the middle of another rape!" to bait a click.

Well said taxed.  I do not click on first time posters links.

Thanks for the heads-up!   I think we all need reminding a shortened link can lead anywhere, possibly to malicious software.

I have a problem at times where a legitimate site's link will have 80 to 100+ characters.

It doesn't happen often but it does happen.

You're a known member, so if you have to shorten it like that, just make a note that it's a legit link to a legit source...

You must click on it to know it a legitimate site.

I was talking about posting a link here of an article, from a site that I have already visited.
(Did that make ANY sense?)

I have had to use tinyurl to shrink a 100+ character url link to a more manageable size.

...and to re-clarity, a popular site... one that gets a lot of traffic. You can check it with a scanner like: https://sitecheck.sucuri.net/
