Supporting evidence: the confederacy defended slavery on the basis of tradition, states rights and accusing the North of destroying a sacred institution and forcing others to accept the freedom of blacks.  Does this sound familiar to you?  There's a reason why all modern confederate sympathizers identify with the right-wing.

Not sure if I agree with the unions comment, but yes, liberals not only advocated acceptance of birth control but also pushed through the first laws criminalizing inter-marital rape.  And yes, plenty of self identified right wingers still think that no such crime should exist.

Simple, "common sense" concepts were actually opposed tooth and nail by conservatives; ie. the Child Labor Act.
