HOW RELEASE OF MENTAL PATIENTS BEGAN
By RICHARD D. LYONS
Published: October 30, 1984

THE policy that led to the release of most of the nation's mentally ill patients from the hospital to the community is now widely regarded as a major failure. Sweeping critiques of the policy, notably the recent report of the American Psychiatric Association, have spread the blame everywhere, faulting politicians, civil libertarian lawyers and psychiatrists.

But who, specifically, played some of the more important roles in the formation of this ill-fated policy? What motivated these influential people and what lessons are to be learned?

A detailed picture has emerged from a series of interviews and a review of public records, research reports and institutional recommendations. The picture is one of cost-conscious policy makers, who were quick to buy optimistic projections that were, in some instances, buttressed by misinformation and by a willingness to suspend skepticism.

Many of the psychiatrists involved as practitioners and policy makers in the 1950's and 1960's said in the interviews that heavy responsibility lay on a sometimes neglected aspect of the problem: the overreliance on drugs to do the work of society.

The records show that the politicians were dogged by the image and financial problems posed by the state hospitals and that the scientific and medical establishment sold Congress and the state legislatures a quick fix for a complicated problem that was bought sight unseen.

We didn't used to have mass killings because our country used to do what all civilized societies have always done.  Crazy people who were a threat to others, were confined involuntarily until they were no longer deemed to be a threat.  The same thing is done in confining persons to a hospital who represent a public health risk and this has been ruled Constitutional.   The only thing that has been ruled unconstitutional is that we can no longer execute someone who was insane at the time of the murder!

The gentler, kinder touchy feely crowd watched "One Flew Over the Coo Coo's Nest" and said AWWW; we need to shut down our State Mental Hospitals.  What could Happen?

Shutting down the state hospitals led to an increase in the # of homeless. Many of the patients could not hold a job to provide for themselves.

Think about it, if these patients had children, then yeah, maybe you could blame the release, but not one of the patients released ever shot up a school or theater, or even a donut shop.
Fact is, most shooters in recent memory, weren't even born yet. But two facts not being discussed is the fact that one, they are all Dims, and the other,, they have a track record of mental issues and prescription SSRI drugs.

This is nothing more than a hit piece against the Right and our hatred for everything govt run.
The private sector can do the job far better and cheaper than the govt any day of the week.

SSRI Warning.

Warning
Adverse reactions are most likely to occur when starting or discontinuing the drug, increasing or lowering the dose or when switching from one SSRI to another. Adverse reactions are often diagnosed as bipolar disorder when the symptoms may be entirely iatrogenic (treatment induced). Withdrawal, especially abrupt withdrawal, from any of these medications can cause severe neuropsychiatric and physical symptoms. It is important to withdraw extremely slowly from these drugs, often over a period of a year or more, under the supervision of a qualified and experienced specialist. Withdrawal is sometimes more severe than the original symptoms or problems.

The problem is we are creating more and more Crazy People all the time. I'd bet every thing I own that the mass shooter cases in the USA other than those committed by islamic terrorists are the result of drug treatment/therapy.  These kids in school are identified by their teachers in need of "behavior modification"....that means refer him to a shrink who will dose the kid to the gills on whatever mind altering drug du jour their buddies in the Pharma industry are pushing.

Young minds and bodies CAN'T HANDLE THESE FOREIGN SUBSTANCES.

You can bet that "education" and Psychiatry/Big Pharma don't want this dirty little secret out in the open. Instead they have to point to the "gun monster" as their impotent "solution".

So the release of mental patients from institutions has produced mass shootings and homelessness???
Did we have mental illness and homelessness during the Presidency of George Washington (1789-97)???
If so, how did we deal w/both of these tragedies ???
Making up preposterous excuses, while predictable, is emphatically not the answer.
Cold and hard reality is direct and simple.
Change is far to timid a word; rather we have evolved dramatically and for the worse, from the time of our Founders to such an extent that, were it possible, they would not even know who we are!!!
Yet the band plays on while the Chorus chants "We are the greatest"! Why of course.
Our destructive malaise will persist and blacken until we face reality and come to terms w/our condition.
We have lost our moral compass and enduring values; our so called leadership being mute testament to that stark reality.

All those involved in law enforcement know that our jail and prisons are full of individuals who are quite different people when they are "back on their meds".  When such individuals get "down a quart" boy don't you know it.  Many of them commit crazy senseless acts of violence on those they love or innocent strangers.  When you add in the effects of them 'self medicating' with illegal drugs and/or alcohol, there is a definite corrolation between deinstitutionalization and the crime rate!

Good point. The general public sees others in their own image, people wanting others to follow the law, be courteous, abide by the law, and for the most part, the majority of the population does, but there is the fringe of the populace that writes their own rules.
Be it punks that rob when you're away, to gang bangers, the scum of society, but then there are the freaks that even the scum avoid, those without remorse, the personalities that flip on a dime, be it inebriation or triggers, these people do not live by societal norms and never will.

It's because of these people, we need to fight for the 2nd, that, and keeping leftists at bay.

I spent my career working among these types of individuals.  The street lingo for them is " they can't hep it; it just de way dey be".  Such individuals used to be removed for society and removed from jail and even removed from prisons.  What the public never sees is that the jails and prisons have become mini psychiatric hospitals, with more and more mental health workers working every day with patient/inmates and monitoring and administrering their meds. while cutody officers maintain the safety, security and orderly operation of the facility.

The frustration of law enforcement and mental health is that once such prisoners are released from confinement there is very little or nothing that can be done to keep these individuals from "deescalating" in the community.  They only "come back into the system" after they commit another crime!  Only the do they get the help they need...behind bars!
