Today is a great day in the history of our nation. Congressman Tim Scott will become the first black man since reconstruction to represent a southern state in the U.S. Senate. In fact, Scott will be the only black man in that body. Possible 2016 presidential hopeful Gov. Nikki Haley has appointed Scott to succeed retiring Senator Jim De Mint. Us in the north can no longer call the south "racist"- though I happen to believe the south is not racist; hence the elections of Marco Rubio, Bobby Jindal, Nikki Haley, Ted Cruz, JC Watts, Mel Martinez, Eric Cantor, Douglas Wilder, and the list goes on. Northern elites in my home state and in other northern states must concede - the south is not racist! Scott is an articulate and bright person, and that is why he has been appointed.
Note: As a whole, the south isn't racist. But, I believe there are many liberals in the south who are racist.

Most Liberals are racist. Even though they don't realize it, and would argue all day that they aren't. Their actions speak for themselves.

But, today is a great day in our history, and we need some good news following the horrors of the past few days.
We are residing in a post racial America. There is still racism, but as a society this is a post racial era. In 1940, over 70% of Americans believed blacks were "genetically inferior" to whites. Today, a black male will be in the U.S. Senate from South Carolina, the first since reconstruction.

No one cares that Tim Scott is black. Libs also ruined the punch the word "racist" used to deliver. I can't go about my day any more unless I'm called racist.

The reason I am glad Tim Scott is in the US Senate is because I believe he brings an outsider's perspective to the U.S. Senate. The fact that he is black is simply of historic note, not the reason why I'm glad he's going to be a senator.
Good choice if he'll stay within what I've heard out of him prior to this appointment. I don't think he'll take up the mantra of the good ole' boys down there either. :rolleyes:

I understand, and I know you like him as a politician, as I do, but the fact he's black doesn't move the needle at all. Calling something "historic" is what libs do for their non-white candidates to continue the narrative that we're racists...
What I find is a bit of delicious irony is Scott is taking over the seat of former KKK'r(dem) strom Thurmond.

I think you're confusing Thurmond with Byrd. I don't think Thurmond was ever a Klan member. Besides, anybody that jumped into Normandy with the 82nd Airborne, can't be all bad. Thurmond did run on the Dixiecrat ticket in 48, and did fight the Civil Rights Bills; but after he switched to the Republican party, he went out of his way to appeal to the black voters of South Carolina, and was the first Southern Senator - Republican or Democrap - to appoint black members to his staff.

Thurmond may not have been a card carry member of the KKK or held some post with an idiotic title like imperial cyclops or whatever ala Byrd But I do recall that he had the support of the local chapter and
they had financed him heavily. And Klan violence in his jurisdiction was
notorious....I also think some of this violence may have led to his disassociation with them in later years.

Actually, Hitler was awarded the Iron Cross for his actions in WWI - he was also temporarily blinded by a poison gas attack.

And, of course, Herman Goering was an ace fighter pilot in WWI and, I believe took command of Von Richtofen's squadron after the Red Baron's death. Keep in mind the life expectancy of a WWI fighter pilot was usually measured in days.
To get back to the subject at hand, Tim Scott, and by extension, blacks and the Republican party; it occurs to me that the Democraps did something very interesting with the voting rights act of 1965 - they resegregated blacks. By putting as many black voters as possible into majority minority districts, they diluted much of the political strength blacks might have had. Is it better to have one black representing one black district? Or is it better to have blacks spread among a number of districts - perhaps being the swing vote in a number of them. It's the difference between merely the cosmetic appearance of - and actual - power.
