Title: Health Care ... Again
Post by: topside on December 21, 2017, 12:41:23 PM
The mandate is repealed in the new Tax Bill.

So we'll see many healthy folks opt out of paying insurance. Also, the subsidies to the insurance companies will end. So it seems likely that the the Insurance Companies are going to crank up the rates ... again. The forced acceptance of pre-existing conditions raises the risk of the pools of people substantially. But when they drop the forcing function, many who used to have insurance and developed a condition are now labeled to have pre-existing conditions - so they'll pay through the nose.

Those with non-elective conditions (heart issues, lungs defects, some cancers ...) will be in the same range of risk as those who chose their sicknesses (sexually promiscuous homos / heteros, drug users, habitual over-eaters, ...).

It's a total train wreck. Health care makes me sick.  Free market also has consequences but at least there aren't strange liberal biases running around distorting in a free market system.

The article suggests that the Dims and Pubs have to get together now and form a new govt. system. Like that will happen. They should just keep pushing it back to the free market. Didn't the RINOs learn anything from their first two failures at HC reform?

I'd think so.

Oh... I thought you were talking about insurance.  I had no idea people were blocked from medical access.

Actually, pushing a big government plan seems like something they'd come together on.  I hope that doesn't happen.

Any healthcare system that is controlled by the government is going to be a train wreck. This is why whatever the GOP proposes has to have as little government involvement as possible.

Hmm - I was a little loose with the phrase. I just thought the pun fit there.

I didn't intend to imply anything about access - that's a different topic than I intended. It's the entanglement of the government trying to control how health care is metered out that makes this topic so hopelessly lost - the point is that it needs to go back to the free market. And that dropping the mandate in the Tax Bill is sort of a repeal but there are still hoods - like the fact insurance companies can't filter their risk pools. Even if the new system were perfectly altruistic (and it's not), it would still eventually go bad as the politicians use the HC industry (and us) to raise funds for their causes and use it as a Marxist control feature.
