Hate Speech

I had a dog years ago.  I loved that dog.   His name was Wolfenheimer.
Now I had that old dog for years and I really loved him.  However, Wolfie (as he was sometimes known) had a little problem.  He was wont to eat his own feces.  I tried and tried to break him of his habit, but apparently that was just the way he was born.  After a while I took to calling him S&%t eater.  I called him this, not because I hated him, but because that was what he was.  One of the things that he was at any rate.
Sometimes people would hear me call him that and become upset about it or ask me why I kept the dog if I hated it so much.  Like I said, however, I loved that dog, I just called him what he was.
Sometimes people would notice that when that old dog began to exercise in that behavior which I found repugnant, that I would leave the area where the dog was.  Again, people would ask me why I kept the dog around if it disgusted me so much.  I had to try to explain that I loved the old mutt, but some of the things which he did I found disgusting and I didn't want to be around him when he was engaging in such repulsive behavior (in my opinion).
I just wanted to try and explain that just because you call a thing that which defines it, it does not mean that you are using hate speech or you are a hater, it simply means you are calling them like you see them.  I loved that dog period.  However, he was a S&%t eater so I called him that which he was.  Now, even though I loved that dog, when he acted out on those proclivities of his that I did not wish to witness I simply left the immediate vicinity.  I did not wish to observe the behavior of his which I found so revolting.  You see, you can love your neighbors, but you don't have to be a witness to their depravities nor do you have to pretend that what they do is okay with you.
I didn't beat that old hound.  I didn't harm him or mistreat him in any way.  I simply called him that which he was.  At no time did I ever feel an ounce of hate toward that old dog.  I was sometimes disgusted by his deviant behavior, and I never wished to see that behavior first hand, but being disgusted by something and not wishing to be a party to it, is a totally different state of mind, emotion, and terminology than hating something.
Hate speech?   For calling something that which it is?  I think not.  Offensive speech?  Yes, it probably does offend some people, but, simply put, some people are easily offended.  Either way, we all have the right  to call things that which they are.  If it offends you personally,  don't listen or walk away.
