The right question, raised in time, can prevent any idiotism, be it an individual or, more importantly, collective act, resulted in not only unnecessary (criminal), but also enormous human costs. Socrates put common notions in written form. We all know that once we dig into any concept that there are complications and sometimes the nuances get us into trouble, i.e., feeling stupid, as you say. That goes without saying for us all.
