First. There Was The Donald. Now, The Butch.

For a good number of years now, the little burg I live in; population after a heavy rain when the tadpoles come out, of somewhere around 110000 to 120000, is home to The Butch, alias  Carroll A Thomas, the second, ( possibly the first ) highest paid Superintendent of schools in the state of Texas.

Under his leadership ( or lack thereof ) our schools have continued to go down in the quality of education delivered to the 'chillens' of Beaumont, but of course, the books and records do not show this. For a number of years, the taxpayers of Beaumont continually beat back school bond issues, usually in the neighborhood of about 50 to 75 million dollars. This was spread over a couple of Supers, including The Butch. About 2 or 3 years ago, the Money ( and there is lots of it in this little burg, got behind a humongous 388+ million dollar school bond. It passed and we are in the throes of building new schools, after some old ones ( including one about two blocks from my house ) have been torn down. The one closest to me has been leveled, site prep is underway, and a fancy, big time, new elementary school is being built. Nothing visually wrong with the old one, but whoo doggy, this one will be fancy.

Bear with me and I will get to the crux of the matter shortly; just a little more history to put this in perspective. One of the projects included in the 388 million+ bond issue was a super new, all fancy, football stadium for use by all the high schools in the city. Shortly before the opening, it was discovered the rice field gumbo the stadium was built on, left much to be desire in a level playing field, and the Lord knows how much money was required to smooth the field. This came complete with a fancy scoreboard, parking facilities, etc. The only problem is it is nowhere close to the hub of the city, but way out on IH10 leading to Houston or back to New Orleans. The center was named the Carroll A ( Butch ) Thomas Educational Support Center. Wowzer! How's that for the name of a football stadium?

Now the kicker. It seems now Mr Butch wants to use taxpayer property, ( BISD ) and taxpayer money to build a hotel and event center.  The hotel will be a 200 to 300 room facility, where teachable skills in hospitality management can be taught along with technological skills and culinary skills.

Problem is there are approximately 35 hotels in the region already with 3500 rooms and averaging about 50% occupancy for the year.

I believe getting rid of The Butch would be a futile effort indeed, for reasons I can not explain without getting fired from NPR.

We had the same kind of crap taking place in Sacto. but on a much larger scale.
The owners of the Kings wanted to use public funds to develop the old Fail grounds, about several hundred acres worth.

Well despite the fact it's the capitol of Ca and a lib State, the residents are predominantly Conservative.
They forced an election on the idea, seeing how the City Council was ready to give them the key to the city, simply because they would get special treatment and seating at the proposed arena.

The whole idea went down in flames, and the Maloufs had to look elsewhere for funding.

Update: received an email earlier comparing Butch to the other 9 highest paid Supers in Texas. He is paid the most, almost $350 Grand with car allowance and perks. The enrollment is 19100 meaning he is paid almost $18 for each child enrolled. The nearest is approximately $8 per child enrolled.

I believe the flak may really get heavy over this crap.
