Feds want to wiretap the Internet

Gee, this can't possibly be cause Obama was sliding face-down on an icy toboggan-run from all his ruined policies. The feds now want to expand Internet power, and the public be damned.

Hurl-alert: NYT news item....

QuoteWASHINGTON — Federal law enforcement and national security officials are preparing to seek sweeping new regulations for the Internet, arguing that their ability to wiretap criminal and terrorism suspects is "going dark" as people increasingly communicate online instead of by telephone.

Essentially, officials want Congress to require all services that enable communications — including encrypted e-mail transmitters like BlackBerry, social networking Web sites like Facebook and software that allows direct "peer to peer" messaging like Skype — to be technically capable of complying if served with a wiretap order. The mandate would include being able to intercept and unscramble encrypted messages.

The bill, which the Obama administration plans to submit to lawmakers next year, raises fresh questions about how to balance security needs with protecting privacy and fostering innovation. And because security services around the world face the same problem, it could set an example that is copied globally.

Well I'm sure he can somehow justify it with the commerce clause. Lord knows they use it to justify everything else they want to do.
If you believe big government is the solution then you are a liberal. If you believe big government is the problem then you are a conservative.

Firsthand, here. Not rumor. The leftists will stifle opposing views any possible way they can.

One of the favorite leftard tricks these days is to file indecency complaints over conservative sites, asking it be declared a "hate site." At least one major software outfit did that, servicing the public library systems across my part of Michigan. They just put up a flag-page warning potential viewers, but never bothered even contacting me as site admin for my side of the story (whatever actual complaint it was all based on).

Yes they are and its obvious they want only their side heard and they want not just stifle but CRUSH the opposition

BILLY Defiant

This is BS, they don't want to "crack down on terrorism" they want to stiffle the Tea party and the Average American who gets online at a froum like this and says "Obamao sucks" or the equivilent.

After all, these are the people who say the tea party and those opposed to higher taxes are terrorists. These are the people who mess with Sheriff Joe because he doesn;t have enough hispanics on his dept and don't say a peep about all the real NARCO terrorists coming across the border in droves.

QuoteAn amalgamated cybersecurity bill that lawmakers hope to pass before the end of the year includes new powers which would allow President Obama to shut down not only entire areas of the Internet, but also businesses and industries that fail to comply with government orders following the declaration of a national emergency – increasing fears that the legislation will be abused as a political tool.

The draft bill is a combination of two pieces of legislation originally crafted by Senators Lieberman and Rockefeller. One of the differences between the new bill and the original Lieberman version is that the Internet "kill switch" power has been limited to 90 days without congressional oversight, rather than the original period of four months contained in the Lieberman bill.

In other words, President Obama can issue an emergency declaration that lasts 30 days and he can renew it for a further 60 days before congress can step in to oversee the powers.

The new powers would give Obama a free hand to not only shut down entire areas of the Internet and block all Internet traffic from certain countries, but under the amalgamated bill he would also have the power to completely shut down industries that don't follow government orders, according to a Reuters summary of the new bill.

"Industries, companies or portions of companies could be temporarily shut down, or be required to take other steps to address threats," states the report, citing concerns about an "imminent threat to the U.S. electrical grid or other critical infrastructure such as the water supply or financial network."

Don't count on there even BEING a 2012 election, at this sorry rate.

FWIW, there is no such animal as the Bush Doctrine, the laws never changed, the were merely placed neatly into a package known as the Patriot Act.

This was a leftist attempt to dirty the President, Clinton before him had broken the wiretap laws, but nothing ever came of it, but as soon as Bush tried to use the same loopholes, the left pushed him into Congress forcing the Patriot Act upon him, he had no choice in the matter.

Things change, but things still stay the same, it's all politics, never with the people in mind.

Oh come on, no one "forced" him to push through the Patriot Act, The Military Commissions Act, justify Warrentless Wiretaps, Rendition, etc. etc. etc.  Him and that PoS Attorney General Gonzo, Cheney, etc. etc. set the stage and crammed this shit down our throats.  Obama has it now and is just expanding it

Thats the point solar the left has enjoyed having the biggest mouths, the loudest voice, they complained about every damn thing constantly and the right sat in the background...then Ohboy here comes the teaparty a mass of right leaning americans that have opened their mouths and just by merely starting talking have DROWNED OUT THE LEFT
The left is baffled, the race card, not working, feminism, dead, abortion way on the backburner, Bush no longer here...they got NOTHING but this massive teaparty kickin their ass...they pray it fizzles and dies

Funny isn't it Zip, the left has already lost power across the board.
Look at the MSM, struggling to stay afloat, no one takes them seriously anymore, they became a mouthpiece for the socialists and it cam back to bite them in the ass.

They put all their eggs in the Hussein basket, little did they know, that the Country wasn't buying what the Marxist was selling.
