Confronting the nation's mounting deficit, President Barack Obama is urging Congress to limit spending on pet home-state projects, while Republicans are challenging him to support an outright ban........

.....The top Republicans in the House, Reps. John Boehner of Ohio and Eric Cantor of Virginia, issued a joint statement welcoming Obama's remarks on earmark reform. But they also raised the stakes, challenging Obama to immediately agree to veto any spending bills that include earmarks.

Could we actually be heading in a good direction???

In the Republicans' weekly address, Rep. Greg Walden of Oregon outlined the GOP's top priorities: creating jobs, cutting spending and reforming Congress.

Walden, who is running the GOP transition committee after the party's House takeover in the midterm elections, said plans are being made to make the legislative process more open, including the installation of cameras in the Rules Committee, where decisions are made on what bills and amendments come to the floor for a vote.

As of the other day Cantor said they were shy a few vote by the GOP to pass this. Seems like some Republicans still are not serious. They are still interested in their own pet projects.

From all ive heard this is meaningless and does not cut the deficit by a penny...its purely symbolic. All it does is take the decision on how to spend the money from each congressman and gives the decision making to an Obama Administrator, the same amount of money is appropriated and spent...so were not saving a dime.

Well that would suck.  But if the bills are vetoed doesn't that mean nothing gets spent?  I may be making this too simplistic... :)

Eliminate entire departments, like Education and Energy. Eliminate do-nothing reports read by nobody but sent to everybody. Consolidate and streamline all federal acquisitions and supply procedures, particularly the U.S. Military.

And impale any SOB who wants an earmark, when most of his staff earns twice what any voter does.
