I had dsl 7 yrs ago...IT SUCKED...my cable connect was great for 6 yrs or so..then went to shit..I had 6 techs out here and finally after 3months the lead tech for brighthouse and his boss said there was nothing else they could do...so I had no choice...so far dsl has been much better, except for this outtage which was caused in california and affected the entire county.

I bitch, groan, and moan about Roadrunner ( Time Warner ) but think of DSL ( at the time with SW Bell ( now ATT again ), and RR is a dream compared.

Brighthouse is Timewarner and RR..my dsl is sprint//embarq/now centurylink.
With RR its a bottleneck in tampa during primetime, my bandwith and speed drops like a rock and the lag spikes are horrific, its a bandwith problem that the county techs here cannot fix and they tell me its not going to be expanded anytime soon and that also brighthouse is monitoring high internet users and deciding whether to charge them more or cut their bandwith again.
With dsl everything depends on how close and how far you are from your CO, mine is right around the corner and I get the full 10mbit dl speed...and its smooth as glass...SO FAR ..I stress so far...ive been there done that with connects

You'll like DSL, much more stable and a consistent connection.

Cable is what you would call a "Party Line", you're sharing the same pipe to the provider as many others which has a number of disadvantages.  DSL you have a dedicated pipe, so while you might not see the "burst" it will be a consistent connection not to mention more secure.

I have a consistent 1 Meg upstream and a 13 Meg downstream connection.  Just wait until they get fiber in your area, I'm still waiting but my little brother has it in Dallas.  He's got a 30 meg pipe and I forget what his upstream is but it's somewhere around 5 -10 meg, insane speeds.

Anyway 'bout a year ago I only had a 6 meg downstream and no problems streaming Nefflix HD with that bandwidth.

Interesting you mentioned fiber optic, I asked the tech that came here about when fiber optic would be installed here...this is a quote...he said a few years ago we ran fiber optic to all the CO's and were planning and moving it to residences but new technology negates the need for fiber optic..I said your telling me theres no need for fiber he said correct...he said they are in the process of rolling out television over the phone lines..he said they have it in two areas of florida right now as a test...
