In an interview set to air on WABC-AM on Sunday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)96%
touted himself as a Republican presidential candidate and said he believed that the current front-runner Donald Trump will not ultimately prevail and be his party's nominee.

Cruz explained to host WABC's Rita Cosby it was his view that eventually Trump's current supporters would find their way to support his candidacy and stated his record going up again Washington as the reason why.

" think in time I don't believe Donald is going to be the nominee and I think in time the lion's share of his supporters end up with us," Cruz said. "And I think the reason is what I was just saying, that if you look to the records of all the Republican candidates there's a big difference between my record and that of everyone else if you ask, who has stood up to Washington?

Cruz did acknowledge having Trump in the field has been a positive for his effort because it highlighted who will be the one to "stand up to Washington."

"I'll note, you know I think the most beneficial thing Donald Trump's involvement in the race has been, I think his involvement has been tremendously helpful to my campaign, because it's framed the central question of this primary," Cruz added. "As who will stand up to Washington? And if that's the central question, the natural next question, that any voter will ask is okay, well who actually has stood up to Washington? Who has a record in that regard?"

This is what many of us here have been saying. I am just surprised Cruz would acknowledge it at this point. It is not time for him to become a focal point of the MSM.

That's what most would think, but does Cruz know something most are ignoring?
I think they've done the math and came to the conclusion that Trump peaked and it's most likely downhill from here on out for Trump.
Cruz is stating the obvious to all of us, but to Trump's base, it may be a way of alerting them to the inevitable.

He is steering voters who have grown disenchanted with Trump for various reasons.

He really didn't criticize Trump.  Every candidate says that THEY are going to win the nomination.  That is not a criticism of Trump per se.

But Cruz does have a keen sense of timing.

Kinda glad to see him go when he does. I do not see Trump or his followers as conservative but I see them more as a side show. As a kid there used to be cartoons before the movie at the drive-in, that pretty much sums up Trump as I see it, the cartoon before the main event.

Precisely my thoughts.  Trump still needs to damage Clinton & Biden, paint them as the corrupt lifelong politicians they are - and both are responsible for THIS fiscal and international debacle the current administration has dumped upon us.   Show they are part of the Obama administration, and we're in for more-of-the-same if either of them becomes the Democrat nominee.

Why would you assume it was an criticism or attack?
I doubt anyone saw it as an attack, just stating the obvious, though for his base/LIV might see it that way. That is one very emotional group.

News headlines billed it as "Cruz finally attacks Trump."

This is Trump's value to the GOP. He is a distraction for the MSM and he is touching folks the other GOP candidates would never have touched. Some will stick around after he is out.

In the medias haste to hurt Bush, they never considered the damage they were doing to their own leftist agenda.
When all is said and done, they will have created their own worst night mare, an Cruz Presidency.

I agree.  I don't see Trump still standing at the end.  He peaked way too soon.  Let's keep in mind we are a year away and a summer away.  People lose interest during summer months and then start looking more closely in Sept.  By then Trump will be grating on everyone's nerves with his rambling, inarticulate tirades.  In fact if he falls in the polls before that, he won't even be a factor.

My money is on Cruz.  Trump is a carnival clown.  His only usefulness has been to raise issues that would not otherwise have been raised, particularly immigration.  Even his tax plan isn't being talked about since he announced it.

kroz

We actually need RINOs to stay in the race.

Christy syphons votes from Jeb!  So does Kasich and Rubio!  Without them in the race, Jeb could be the leader.

The ones we want to drop out are the conservatives like Jindal and Santorum.  They syphon votes that would go to Cruz.  Cruz would also get Rand voters if he drops out.

I agree that Trump has plateaued, but I don't think Carson has.  He seems to be gaining a bit of momentum.  He draws from both RINO and conservative voters... quite a paradox.  It boils down to the fact that he is a very likable person that garners respect.
