Since write in votes are almost always unsuccessful, and since the party has abandoned Cruz, why does he not run as an independent?
It appears like he would have significant backing.

He'd have more if the news media would have fairly covered him and not left him out of half their GOP stories (the other half being hit pieces). I note you say "almost always." Hee, hee..... With Trump as the presumptive nominee, don't be so sure write-ins won't work.

The majority of states have "sore loser" laws.

Its a law that says if you lose the primary as a candidate of one party, you are not allowed to be on the ballot as a candidate of a different party for the general election.

So even if Cruz had the time and money to get on all 50 state ballots as an Independent, or as another 3rd party candidate, the majority of states would not allow it.
The power of the American people, when we rise up and stand for liberty, knows no bounds. - Ted Cruz

Our greatest hope for Cruz now is that Trump supporters stay home in the remaining states, Cruz (still being on the ballots) wins, Trump is short of 1237 during the convention, and his loud mouth has portrayed him as the liberal he truly is.  Then once we reach convention the delegates see the true Trump and support Cruz for the nomination.

If that's our greatest hope then I weep for the nation. As it stands Sanders has a better chance at beating Hillary than Cruz ever did at Trump.
