Add to this the Obamacare tax that MUST be paid, and what little money they've got is NOT likely to get spent on a car.

I suspect that's the main reason the subsidies were enacted to begin with -
to create dependency on government in an otherwise conservative state.

Don't fall for the media spin.
The majority of farmland is tied up in Ag conglomerates from around the nation, they do not live in Iowa.
I get a three way split off farmland in Iowa and Nebraska, we lease it out to a Ag corporate entity, and regardless of yield, or profit on their part, we get paid a flat fee.
In other words, the only ones benefiting from these subsidies don't even live in the state.
Mark my word, Trump is going to get hammered in Iowa.
