Wow, we're supposed to be so incredibly grateful for them doing the job we pay them for. Like they were doing you a favor/sarc.

We'll be lucky to get anyone who wants to become a police officer in the current social climate.  Working downtown L. A., I really appreciated them.

The biker patriots and vets leading the way, and there are thousands of them. This is when the George W. Bush legacy makes sense. These guys know first hand what we see going down the drain.

Very true, Dori.  T'was  time, not long ago, when young men and women were steered towards entrance exams by family and friends (many of whom were cops) or they were attracted by a job  which was respected by the public.  Sadly, neither of these motivators exist today.  I feel sorry for the young cops today.

Billy's bayonet

This reminds me of the "old" days when Hippies would burn the American flag and call the cops "pigs" etc. Construction workers would decsend upon them and kick their asses and the hippies would scream for help from the cops.

Then don't do it. I'm sure if they could get a job that paid as well, with as good a pension, the majority of them would do so. You really need to stop worshiping at the feet of the police. BTW, the "current climate" is everybody walking around with a cell phone camera, showing just what kind of people we have enforcing the law. Officer "O'Malley" , the friendly neighborhood cop, is long gone. They are pretty much no different than every other government worker you run into.

I've never had a problem and have a lot of friends in the force.  They are great people and do a great service.  And no, none of them have gotten rich either. The median income of a Los Angeles police officer is 57,000, and that isn't a lot considering what it costs to live here.

Never viewed the story (and I have revisited it) as praising the cops in ANY manner.  Like most here, I saw the irony in these anti-police protestors having their bacon saved by the cops.

In fact, having participated in policing hundreds of demonstrations in NYC, I can tell you that the cops would rather that all parties go home.  The cops are always placed between opposing forces and it is always a no win situation for them.  The best they hope for is is keeping them apart which is not easy when the police are usually the smallest of the 3 groups and they are split to monitor the opposing groups.  They must stay neutral even when they are the object of the protest...hard to do when the protestors are pointedly screaming vile comments at you.

The commander at this incident will, no doubt, be questioned about his/her failure to keep the opposing groups apart....so, seeking praise is hardly what was on his/her mind after this went down.
