China is restricting Rare Earth minerals to the West.
Why is this a good thing? Because thanks to the leftists and the EPA, they have made it nearly impossible to mine our own minerals right here in the U.S., we have more than enough to supply the Nation for thousands of years.

Think of it in this manner, OPEC decides to stop shipping oil to the West.
What would we do?

Rare Earth Minerals are used in many high tech products, many of which we don't manufacture, but those that we do, are mostly found in the alternative energy industry, an industry that is heavily subsidized by you, the taxpayer.
This is just more proof that children have no business in charge of running the Country.

HONG KONG — China, which has been blocking shipments of crucial minerals to Japan for the last month, has now quietly halted some shipments of those materials to the United States and Europe, three industry officials said this week.
The Chinese action, involving rare earth minerals that are crucial to manufacturing many advanced products, seems certain to further intensify already rising trade and currency tensions with the West. Until recently, China typically sought quick and quiet accommodations on trade issues. But the interruption in rare earth supplies is the latest sign from Beijing that Chinese leaders are willing to use their growing economic muscle.

"The embargo is expanding" beyond Japan, said one of the three rare earth industry officials, all of whom insisted on anonymity for fear of business retaliation by Chinese authorities.

They said Chinese customs officials imposed the broader restrictions on Monday morning, hours after a top Chinese official summoned international news media Sunday night to denounce United States trade actions.

Is this the start of the "big squeeze"?  Kick the U.S. when it's down?  What's next?  Oil embargo?  Increasing tariffs on goods exported by the USA?  It's coming.  Wait and see.

We are all going to pay a horrible price in the end.  All of these years of "NIMBY" bullshit, and the enviro-Nazis are going to be the FIRST cry-babies screaming for their gasoline and heating oil and other basic necessities, when they are no longer available or are too expensive for them to pay for with their food stamps and government handouts.

I wonder if/when an actual world wide Trade War begins what the American government will do since it's been reported that about one in four American jobs are associated with 'globalism' and the world market.

China could give a shit if millions of Chinese starve to death if the world is thrown ito a financial collapse.  As a matter of fact, the prominent Chinese social Elites would prosper if they only had fewer millions of subjects standing in line for the the limited goods and services their STATE doles out to those who toe  the party line!

If we do get into a gigundous world wide trade war, the third world has the very most to lose as the developed nations scramble to keep themselves above water and keep their populations supplied with food, energy and shelter.

I predicted this long ago, but never expected to see it happen in my lifetime.
That we would kill off all US industry and be at the mercy of the rest of the World for everything we don't make here at home, but once again, thanks to Hussein, and his socialist agenda has once again exposed our vulnerabilities.
The leftists have pushed hard to remove the manufacturing industry, complaining that is was polluting the Planet, with no real alternative, like you said, "NIMBY".

This is a wake up call and possibly our last warning, I just hope the GOP will use it like the bomb it is, and drop it on the Dims.

Obamanomics has mimiced the Chinese Communists who apparently are trying to corner the market on the development and exportation of green technology; apparently all those green jobs are going to be for yellow people!

(snip)

The row over rare earths has led to calls in major economies to diversity away from China, fearing that Beijing will increasingly wield its economic clout for political reasons.

The United States announced Friday that it would investigate charges that China has handed out hundreds of billions of dollars in illegal subsidies in a bid to dominate the fast-growing green-energy sector.

The probe comes after the United Steelworkers union petitioned trade officials to investigate practices it claims contravene World Trade Organization rules and cost American jobs.

China denied the charges and hit back that the United States was also subsidizing green firms.

Well Duh! That's all that is keeping the Green movement alive, is Gov subsidy, without it, there wouldn't be one.

But here's the ironic part, China has invested heavily in the Green movement, but it is all about to come to a Freakin Screeching halt.
Once we kick the Commies out of office, and bring an end to this ripoff of the American taxpayer.
The Chinese will be stuck holding product no one can afford to buy, from windmills to solar panels, the Gov subsidy will dry up on the vine.
I soooo look forward to taking back my industry from the Communist Green movement! 8)

China is using "green energy" just as they are using capitalism; as a means to an end.  They could really care less about what happens to their people or their economy in the short term, they have not altered their course of world domination and a big fat one world marxist state, with themselves as central figures in determining how the resources of the world will be exploited and divided up amoung the runling elites of the "united" nations.

China slapped every lefty in the face a long time ago. When the first stock market opened China stopped being "the future" as far as lefties are concerned which is why China doesn't get much mention among leftists any more.

What this looks like to me is the result of a stupid idea that's coming home to roost.

Some years ago the Chinese decided they'd buy themselves a monopoly on rare earths since quite a bit of high tech is dependent on rare earths.

They "bought" the monopoly with the pitiful per capita earning rate of the Chinese of the time and a complete disregard for environmental considerations that'd drive up costs. They undercut western operations and those western operations closed leaving China as almost the sole supplier of rare earths. Trouble is, the monopoly's only maintainable by keeping prices low and keeping supply reliable.

Now that it's clear China isn't a reliable supplier the price of rare earths will go up as they already have. Higher prices mean those closed, western mines can reopen and it's "hasta la vista, baby" to the Chinese rare earths monopoly.

Just as well for the Chinese since a major part of the reason for dumping all that money into developing rare earth mining capacity was the phony demand for "green" nonsense. Nonsense which is supported by subsidies meaning the Chinese are dependent, once again, on the American domestic political scene.

What happens when the "green" movement runs out of steam and the subsidies run out of political support? The Chinese can't even run to the World Trade Organization, they're just screwed.

Americans are just as much to blame for this.
China has become extremely powerful because retailers have been buying cheap crap from China and reselling it over here.

And it is not just democrats buying that cheap stuff and it isn't just democrats at the companies who have been outsourcing jobs, not was it just democrats making it harder for companies to manufacture here or pushing companies to move overseas.

Almost everyone is involved in this.

There are hundreds of container ships leaving China every day, full of good bound for the US.

BILLY Defiant

As I have said many times, Libs are waaayyyy to stupid to understand the sophisticated Chinese mind.

What fools we are to them!

Very true Wiz, but this isn't about cheap merchandise, this is about the left and their move to destroy our way of life, via energy and how we use it.
The left, in concert with the Green movement have made it virtually impossible for us to expand our energy needs, from drilling to mining, the Dims have used the EPA like a weapon against us, all in an effort to control energy.

This move by China exposes just how stupid the left has been in it's pursuit to control our economy, the Chinese have taken off the bandage and exposed a horrible wound, a wound that is minerals.
We haven't been able to even produce 10% of the rare Earth minerals needed to support our own needs, let alone, solar panels, wind turbines or lithium batteries, all of these are being produced somewhere other than the US, anyway, those that we do manufacture, we get the minerals from China.

This is why I say it was a slap in the face to the libs, or more appropriately, a kick off the cliff.

There is no energy crisis, the only crisis is that we can't produce our own.

Yes, sad but true.
I said to a friend about a year ago that it was only a matter of time before China became a consumer of its own goods and wouldn't need to export its rare earths at low prices, jacking up the cost of wind power and other equipment that needs them.
Ramp up time for the California mine is around 2 years and some of the patents needed are not owned in the US. There are lots of problems. These metal oxides are toxic, so you have to be careful or risk killing people, damaging the landscape and our water supplies and animals, so a whole lot of things have to be taken into consideration.

Two questions...If this starts a trade war, just how many American corporations will get hurt both ways...since they moved to china.

Second...Arent they slapping the Corporations that made them this economic power more than they are liberals. ?
