Chaffetz Thinks Congressmen Should Get $30,000 Extra For Housing

I knew my "Devil's Advocate" post would be controversial.  However, I know for a fact that we have difficulty finding qualified individuals who share our values and beliefs who are willing to make the sacrifices it take to run for and then remain in political office. The fact is that it takes a person of some personal wealth to be able to support a home and family in their home state and be in Washington when we need them to and balance travel and time between their family and paying their bills at home and doing the people's business in Washington for two years!  I don't think we necessarily get our best and our brightest when we only have candidate who are very wealthy (and/or lawyers).  Does that make sense to anyone else?

Jason Chavez floated this idea after he did not seek reelection and it would not be self serving.

If I might play the Devil's Advocate; Rich Congressmen can pay their own expenses and afford to be in Washington doing the work of the Devil as much as such work may require. I am rather uncomfortable with having the Representatives we sent to Washington to represent us only being individuals who are wealthy enough to be able to support their homes and families in their home districts and not bat an eye at the cost of housing Washington DC.  In the great scheme of things, it's not a whole lot of money.

If we want to have good, conservative fighters in Washington, then we need to have regular, everyday neighbors who may not have the means to even compete with the wealthy Elites of the Swamp.

I'm not sure, but this point needs some consideration.

We are able to send our Representatives from our districts every two years.  Why don't we have any regular every day people in Congress?  Do they all have to be lawyers and millionaires?
----------
Hmm.........................so $30,000 for a good conservative fighter? Wow, sounds like a real bargain. So How many have we got now??? Er..................???? Time for a reality check!
The frauds and hustlers who infest DC wound't know a Rule (Principle) of Conservatism from
the Rule on Pass Completion/Incompletion in the NFL.
Suggestion. Keep them as far ways from DC as possible w/ their ability to conspire and cheat.
Have them vote on the Net so at least we can save the $30,000 bucks per asshole.

It should be mandatory that if you wanna be any politician that bad, you should be forced to sleep on a cot in that position's office.

Every day the US gets worse. We pretend everything is fine, justify things, lie to ourselves, and stay silent.

Do you think things will get better on their own?

At point will you get mad? When will you resist? What will say when the economy collapses, you get sent to the concentration camps, the civil war starts, and WWIII breaks out?

Will you feel any responsibility at all?

Are you just going to take it?

You are really a bad troll. So easily identified. This is a serious forum so you may be excused.

Many of them do "have cots in their office" and ...

this is not for himself... Jason Chaffetz said this on the way out the door...

" but before going, the Utah Republican gave an exit interview to the Hill on Tuesday in which he bemoaned the costs that members of Congress bear in splitting their time between Washington and their home states. "Washington, DC, is one of the most expensive places in the world, and I flat-out cannot ..."

" To top it off, Chaffetz has been one of those guys who sleeps on a rollaway cot in his office rather than test the waters of DC's cutthroat real-estate market. At least 40 other House members share this habit, "

Actually, I commend Chaffetz, as you said he slept in his office.  I object to the ones who can
afford expensive digs, and can deduct it on their taxes.
I see the issue as this and I always wondered why the Federal Government is paying members of
the House and Senate...one could consider that a conflict of interest.  They are sent to Washington
to represent their States, and the citizens of their States.    Why aren't the States paying their
salaries, and providing a stipend.

Why are they not working for home 90% of the time.  With the communications we have now days they don't need to spend 24/7 in DC.  It was to be a part time job not a full time job.  They have made it full time.
