Border Wall or Shutdown Government?
« on: August 25, 2017, 06:00:27 AM »
CNN says a Government Shutdown would be a disaster for the GOP, since they control the Senate, House and Presidency.  The GOP would have nobody to blame for government inaction but themselves, and Donald Trump's inability to lead as President.  (my rendering, the narrative is being batted around).

Regardless of what the Main Steam Media (MSM) thinks ... they believe you would think a shutdown is bad, therefore change your vote 2018 to a different party, provided they can make it a big deal.   So is a government shutdown, even if a last resort for Trump for border wall funding, worth the hassle?

Should President Trump stand his ground, fight to keep the promise to build the border wall (regardless of the funding source), or back down and trust Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell to come up with an alternative plan ... if there is an alternative plan?

Do you feel confident about the House and Senate after failing to repeal Obamacare, they can push through legislation for border wall funding?

I always laugh at this nonsense, simply because a shutdown used to be viewed as a good thing, Filibusters were just another day in DC.
I think it was Carter that changed the rules, but the fact remains, it's pure semantics, because the govt really doesn't shut down, in fact, if the gop'E wanted to, they could easily change the rules and assure all of govt continues to function while they pretend to do the work of the people, completely removing the leftist media sting that seems to panic only the left.

Let's assume trump shuts down the govt in the context being presented, I believe Trump will win the game of showman and steal the leftists' thunder, because Trump won't close national parks like the Marxist did, in his attempt to make Americans feel the sting of a so called shut down.

I do not trust the GOP to do anything beyond what is absolutely necessary to keep their current jobs.
The GOPe played the repeal Obamacare game for 7 years with worthless votes, and when it came down to the repeal vote, sided with the Democrats to continue Obamacare.   It is not Donald Trump's fault, nope - neither Paul Ryan, nor Mitch McConnell could not get a single Democrat to side with them - they did NOTHING in the MSM to apply pressure on members of their own or the opposition party.

Ryan and McConnell are worthless to Donald Trump, and it would appear they are slow-walking the Trump agenda as well as keeping "mum" when they should be using this opportunity to push for even the most basic GOP positions - and are not.

Donald Trump was absolutely correct in calling out both GOP leaders, and doing it in a very public way during his Rally in Arizona.   Pressure needs to be brought to bear on these Washington insiders who have forgotten they work for the American People and not for Political Lobbyists.  It is evident the MSM is less likely to promote anything Trump wants, and appears to be actively providing "cover" for Mitch and Paul - I believe they hate President Trump that much.    The more pressure from the White House on Ryan and McConnell, the better - and don't forget, Ronald Reagan went around the MSM to the people to push his agenda of Tax Cuts through Democrat Houses, even with Government shutdowns, it worked!

We have Obamacare today, not because of President Trump.   This one started with the Democrats, and when given the opportunity to repeal, neither Paul Ryan, nor Mitch McConnell exercised their full leadership, make the case to the American public, or apply pressure on the members they preside over.  When individual Senators who have pledged to repeal Obamacare, can stand up and vote against repeal, and walk away - without so much as a whimper from the Senate Majority Leader - something is wrong in Washington.   Time to go nicely, or be forced out, Mitch.

The next task on the agenda, funding the building of the wall, is being slow-walked by Paul Ryan... and Mitch McConnell.... again.  This is both unAmerican, and against the promises the GOP has made to Americans, and contrary to their oath to defend our borders.

After this, Paul Ryan expect to present a new Tax Plan - I expect it to fail miserably.  Why?   Anything that makes President Trump look good, is frowned upon by the Senate & House.  Instead of pedal-to-the-metal-politics like we endured with Barak Obama, pushing lots of laws and regulations upon us, they have decided to creep along slowly, and let Donald Trump do all the heavy lifting.  It is no wonder, the House and Senate have terrible approval ratings - they have earned it.

Write your Congressman & Senator.  President Trump is not the problem, *they* are the ones breaking promises.
It could be a new era in Washington, if it were not for McConnell and Ryan.

Shut it down, and NO back pay.  Let their Union pay for there time off.
Also NO pay for Congress for that time.  Let the pay there own Medical until the government is back up and running and the wall is being built.

IF I worked for a Co. and they shut down for a month or two I would not get paid.  This will help lower the lower the swamp and we can see what people they don't need.

Where did I read a shutdown in Washington = a boom in local sales?

They quit spending OUR money, and actually start spending their OWN.

As I had previously commented on the issue; Trump signed a budget bill that did NOT allocate any additional fence or monies for any future wall.  He signed it and now he's saying he's going to shutdown the government on a issue he's already signed off on??  Maybe I've missed it, and yes he's trying to blame the DEMS, but I don't hear a lot of noise from them on this.  Gee ... perhaps it's because the GOP holds the majority and the DEMS know that they've got Ryan and the establishment on their side.  Ryan and the GOPe have proven this on more than one occasion.

Depends, was it a continuing resolution only good for a year, which in truth is just passing the buck to avoid an actual budget, or was it a two resolution, which again, means nothing, considering Trump is calling for an "Actual Budget" Bill.
Sure, it's 5 months early, but he is campaigning against the Establishment and putting them on notice early.

It was a bill to avert that last gov't shutdown. Yes, it put money towards more border security, but it specifically eliminates any future funding for border security.

I don't know where you got your information, but the actual Bill states otherwise.

House spending bill funds all of Trump's initial $1.6 billion border wall plan
 Jul 11, 2017

A must-pass Homeland Security funding bill proposed by House Republicans on Tuesday includes $1.6 billion to fund the beginning of a border wall along the Mexican border that President Trump promised voters in 2016.

The money in included in the fiscal 2018 Department of Homeland Security appropriations bill, which is up for a subcommittee vote on Wednesday.

The $44.3 billion measure pays for a broad array of federal security programs, including aviation security, border and immigration enforcement, customs, cyberterrorism protection, drug smuggling prevention and natural disaster response.

The legislation includes $1.6 billion for a "physical barrier construction along the U.S. southern border."

The move will appease Trump and conservatives, but will likely set up a spending showdown with Democrats, who have pledged to block spending legislation that funds the wall.
