Our current Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood, would love to ban 'em or jam 'em or both.

Texting while driving is stupid and dangerous; this is common sense.

Requiring carmakers to install equipment that will disable cell phones while the car is in operation is what LaHood wants to do. That is also stupid and dangerous.

This is just another Obama nanny-stater stepping up to the plate for his shot at the "Big Brother" title.

Read all about it.

Im all for banning ALL cell phone usage in cars...There should be HUGE fines that are enforced and multiple violations you face jail time.
Cell phones in cars are  a scourge and kills and maims more people than alchohol.

Just walk through your life and PAY ATTENTION...you cant go to a supermarket without some asshole on a cell phone stopped with the cart in the middle of the aisle waving her/his hands yelling in the phone oblivious theres other people even on the planet..cell phone use in vehicles in undefensible anymore.

arpad

A cell phone jammer's a transmitter and there are certain limits on what the government, because of international treaty, can do in that regard. There's also the problem of limiting the jamming to the interior of the car and what do you in an emergency? If you see a house on fire or a fresh car wreck you have to pull over and stop your engine before you can make a phone call.

It's the sort of idea someone without much sense of responsibility and no concerns for having to answer for the consequences would come up with. In other words, a lefty.

Arpad the arguement you need your cellphone to report emergencies doesnt wash...until a few years ago that wasnt even happening...reporting emergencies pales compared to the deaths and costs of cell phone usage in cars...we all pay more insurance because of it...
Anyone thats not for making cell phone use in cars illegal should not be for being under the influence of alchohol illegal either....if you want people to drive and use cell phones than let them drive drunk its less of a threat than the cell phones

But using your logic, children shouldn't be allowed, along with radios or or any other distraction in the car.

I hate the things myself and never use mine, but regulating behavior is not an American principal.
This falls under the stupidity of hate speech.

How about we give teeth to a law that states "if you cause an accident while texting" and give it teeth?
But with hands free cell technology, good luck catching people talking.

Big difference solar...cell phone use while driving kills far far more people that alchohol or second hand smoke....My wife and I both have been hit in parking lots by women backing out of a parking spot on the cell phone oblivious to whats around them...first time was minimal dmg the second time it cost 2600 she pushed in my door and front fendor and it was all Cell phone..
There is absolutely no way people from the youngest driver on up are going to voluntarily stop using their cell phones
The insurance industry released a study that I can find yet damnit...that cell phones kill 7 times more teenagers than all other vehicle distractions combined including alchohol and drugs....something has to be done about this..this is a problem that is just going to grow and grow

So I ask you, do we start pulling over every person singing or talking to themselves?
Because with Blutooth technology, you will never know who is on the phone or merely talking to their self.

This is why you will never be able to regulate behavior, no matter how much you hate it.
I understand your anger, I see stupidity everyday, but laws will never stop it.

I still don't know how I survived the first 40 years of my life without a cell phone.  Driving in my car all those years without a cell phone.  Being inside of a store without a cell phone.

Oh yeah, we had PAY phones all over the place.  If something was important enough that somebody needed to make a phone call, they found the nearest pay phone, inserted a quarter, and made their phone call.  Amazing how that worked.

As I have said many times, our society are VICTIMS of our own advancements in technology.  It's made millions of people lazy, reckless, and intellectually crippled.

Your absolutely right AF....they need to pursue this cellphone jamming technique and until them put cellphone usage against the law EVERYWHERE its a scourge on all of us
Its something that risks EVERYONES lives...everyone is either a driver or a passenger

Seriously everyone of you has seen more than once some guy or gal stopped in the middle of the store arguing or yapping and they dont even know where they are ...thats the same thing they do while they are driving a two ton killing machine...its got to stop

Y know Zip, you do have an alternative, move out of the city.
Where I live, cell phones aren't an issue, not one bit.

The more crowded an area, the more you will notice it, besides, common courtesy still exists in rural communities.

I say ban all cell phones except for Truck [Semi's] drivers. I use my cell phone all the time to find out where my next load is. It's almost imposable to find a place to park to use a land line

Indy

So the guy trapped in his overturned car on some lonely back road calls help how? :(

It's not a perfect world, Indy.  You're starting to sound like a liberal, with questions like the one you asked.

Let's break this down:

How many people get trapped in their overturned cars every year?

And of those that do get trapped in their overturned cars, how many are CAPABLE of making a cell phone call for help, either because they are injured or their cell phone is out of their reach?

You are wanting to give Gov more control over our lives.
What we do, is our business. This is no different than the seat belt law, if I want to risk my life, thats my business, not the Gov.
Police have enough of a workload, without having to pull people over for using a cell phone.
Or are you suggesting we add a whole new police force just to stop cell users?
