I find this interesting because it seems to be the one time there is consequences for not paying for something in the entitlement class.

It's the wrong ruling.

Water is a basic need for survival for a Human Being don't you people ever watch Discovery channel's old "survivalist shows?"

And I'm not joking either...because the one thing they tell people right off to find, is a FRESH WATER SOURCE.

You can go for a week or two or three (maybe) without food.

You go without water for three days, your dead.

That's true folks, they taught us that in basic human survival in AIT.

Even the Military says the thing you do is find FRESH WATER...and preferably water that has been treated, or boiled, or at least filtered in some way. For basic survival.

And yet Seriously, aren't monopolies illegal in the U.S.? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_antitrust_law

Sure looks as if it is. The State has obligated itself, these cities have obligated themselves, both through enactment of law's which require some utilities to be continued because they are a necessity for Human health and survival. That's right.

Obamacare, requires that a citizen have access to such things, as free access to basic needs for survival such as fresh water.

Through Obamacare the State is obligated to feed you too.

Plus then there is the creation of an illegal monopoly for access of a fresh water source.

Though I do agree, that if you just don't pay the bills you should be penalized in some way. I mean a judge could be given the legal option of not just stopping a shut off, but also of garnishment. Plus court cost's of course. Then I bet the bills would just be paid.
One of every five Americans you meet has a mental illness of some sort. Many, many, of our veteran's suffer from mental illness like PTSD now also. Help if ya can. :) http://www.projectsemicolon.org/share-your-story.html
And no you won't find my "story" there. They don't allow science fiction. :)

Are those living off the American Taxpayer given the funds to pay these basic bills or not?  I assume they are.  I see how those dependent on the Taxpayer spend their EBT cards -- chips, pizza, pop and other worthless "food."

I'm betting they have more than enough, but because they live freely off those of us who work, they squander their freebies and demand more.  I have no sympathy.

The Detroit River (or the Rouge River) is close by. They HAVE water. Maybe it's time they WORK for it.

I didn't realize that you were one of our hardcore liberals.

The constitution says that the US govt will NOT deny you water.  Meaning that you will not be stopped from buying it from the utility, or in bottles from Walmart, or from having some ambition and catching rainwater in some sort of system, or being creative and drilling a well that may serve you for 100 years.

What the constitution doesn't guarantee is free stuff from somebody else.  UNLESS you are physically or mentally retarded.  Then we give you free stuff, and you must swallow your pride and be a ward of the state.  Able bodied & minded people can just go thirsty if they're too damned lazy to get themselves water in the 101 ways it's available.

As you say, food, clothes, a car, and a phone are right there with a "right to water".  Just not catered and gifted to anyone's lazy ass.

The City of Detroit water comes from the Detroit River but now the city's water department has been revamped and a more regionally-based control imposed, allowing former municipal customers in other cities to now have a greater share in decisions made by that notoriously corrupt department.

The synthetic outrage over shutoffs centers not on the taxpayers who fell behind in payments, but on illegal hook-ups for thousands of abandoned structures within that city. These are NOT charity cases better-served by existing relief plans now in place for genuine hardship cases. The illegal hook-ups are, in a word, criminal actions.

Crush the leeches. Tear down their stolen homes and drive them from the neighborhoods.

The Detroit News story link is here, and both the emergency-relief programs and also the spin-off of that department are both mentioned.

The brain-dead leftist view from the Detroit Free Press is here, evidently excusing the idea that 150% of federal poveryy guidelines --- PLUS no rent or property tax on the home you're squatting in --- winds up with you having enough cash to pay for your water, even if you're illegally squatting in the home......

I live west of Detroit, not in it.

Local courts are jammed with far-far-leftist lawsuits intended to OK the squatting, and the shutoffs are comedy in themselves because the city crew is scarcely off the property and the dirtbags come back and rehook their illegal connections. Again, there are numerous ways for LAWFUL property owners to get relief. The parasites can snivel all they want but they support the criminals, not the decent people.

I'm not, I'm a capitalist.

It was the government which took that responsibility out of the hands of the citizen, and put it into the hands of government. Saying that it and it alone will provide that resource.

So, let Government then pay for it.

I'd rather see government spending it's money on that, than providing welfare to non-americans. Who just happen to walk across the border.

Although yes ideally government would get out of that altogether and allow free and open markets, but I won't hold my breath for that anytime soon.

Yeah, I can't disagree too much with you here.  Apparently many govts are outlawing things like rain collection and wells, which does make it their damned responsibility at that point.  Sort of like banning legal guns on certain properties, then waffling on whether security is their responsibility.

As you say, if they allow us to do what we will for ourselves with no restrictions, then we can tell the moochers that they have no excuse.

Apparently it's illegal to live off the grid now, in most situations besides a hunting cabin.  You can't set up your own heat, water, outhouse, and oil lamps in a neighborhood.

I would not be surprised that quite a few of the folks not paying their water bills are paying their cell phone and cable bills. Why, because those companies will cut off service. Irresponsibility does not deserve rewards. We have too much of that now in our society.
