I believe there is some danger in this as society keeps pushing people to think of themselves as children for longer and longer. A recent survey says that the average millennial doesn't think of themselves as an adult until 30! Juxtapose that with the fact that Pony Express riders were as young as 11. Not that we should want our teenagers to "risk death daily" but it certainly seems back in the day they were able to rise to the challenge when pushed to.

I would point out that $25/week was a SHITPOT of money in those days! Average laborer wage back then was something well south of $1/day in the "civilized" east, and it was much less in the wild west, beyond the Mississippi.

I think one of the worst ideas ever -- naturally a product of the great Leftist upheaval of the late 1960s -- is the 26th Amendment, which gives 18-year-old children the same voting rights that I have. The simple 'sound bite' argument then was, "If he's old enough to go to war, he's old enough to vote!" I'm not sure I have the time to disassemble that one, considering the truckloads of blatant stupidity it contains. I'll leave it here -- The necessary skill sets for soldiering and responsible voting are... not quite the same.

Exactly. The sound bite argument, which was really rooted in resentment over the draft, fell apart on first glance because it included women, who were never drafted or required to fight. Even looking at men, only about one in five called for examination was actually drafted, and only a small percentage of those were sent overseas (Vietnam at the time). Contrary to popular belief then and now, 2/3 of combat troops sent to Vietnam were volunteer recruits, not draftees.

It is worth noting, and I recently wrote about this, that no one has been drafted since the 26th Amendment went into effect.

It hit me when I was making Min wage, $1.65. an hour and my check were short a few hours, I was pissed.
Dad said it only gets worse, hide every penny you can, those bastards will steal you blind. He was spot on of course....

I think it was probably 27 for me when I finally finished cooking, there's a lot for a young man focused on poo-tang 24/7 every second of the day, before he finally gets a chance to breathe and start figuring things out on his own.

Seriously, between owning a business and trying to get laid, there wasn't a lot of time for much else.
Youth is wasted on the young, what a cruel freakin joke.

How many times have we said, or thought, "If I knew then, what I know now..."

So many opportunities I walked away from, or should have walked away from..  no, it's the 20-20 vision of history that's a cruel taskmaster.

Like vetting a candidate, If you would have KNOWN they'd become the next RINO.
Why shouldn't we always suspect Marco Rubio, and not trust him?

Can we really think independently if critical facts about history are omitted?
I'm sure Walter Josh would have something pithy to say.

Exactly! Age brings Wisdom and intellect, but age also brings on an 'I don't give a shit' attitude, simply because you have more health issue and pains than you have ire for ass hole politicians.

If we were born old and aged young, we'd be in our prime to fight the good battle, but about the time wisdom finally kicks in, about all many of us have left is sitting on the front porch yelling at passing cars to slow down, and for kids to 'stay off my damn lawn!'

It's a wonder the human race actually survived, when one considers, it was the young and stupid that had to face their food head on.
Makes ya wonder if God was actually a woman, playing a cruel joke on men and allowing the women safety as gatherers, and letting the men face food with teeth and claws and the ability to fight back.

How's that one go?

"God made you beautiful, and me stupid, so I'd marry you!"  or translated as...  "God made you beautiful & stupid so I'd be forced to marry you after I knocked you up."   also translated as... "Beer made you beautiful, it was settled via shotgun at the altar."

or is it

"God made look rich, and you stupid to tolerate my farts & marry me!"  It's all a blur as I get older.

and my favorite ... "Don't work harder, work smarter"

Took awhile to really figure out what that means:   "Become a smart ass comedian & get paid for it to quit working."  working on that angle..
