QuoteNorth Korean Missile Launch Fails, and a Show of Strength Fizzles

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korea launched a ballistic missile Sunday morning from near its submarine base in Sinpo on its east coast, but the launch failed, according to American and South Korean military officials.
The timing was a deep embarrassment for the North's leader, Kim Jong-un, because the missile appeared to have been launched to show off his daring as a fleet of American warships approached his country to deter provocations.
Cmdr. Dave Benham, a spokesman for the United States Pacific Command, said the military had "detected and tracked what we assess was a North Korean missile launch at 11:21 a.m. Hawaii time April 15."
The missile blew up almost immediately, and the type of missile involved is still being assessed, he said.

It's not over yet over there. This latest missile attempt just fanned the fire! I think the short crazy fat guy is Dead man walking. Someone is going to take him out and I would put my money on China!

Watch the video of John Sudworth (both).   ...granted, both of they would have passed censorship.

I've often wondered, "If we could get the IDEAL of Liberty and Freedom to these people, could or would they respond positively, or would it take near annihilation and occupation to turn their culture around, a generation, perhaps?"

Iraq is still 'up in the air' as to their future.   Maybe just liberation isn't enough.

Japan worked, Germany worked pretty well also.. until the idiots opened the borders to lunacy - now they're trying to figure out how to prevent Tranny, again!

I don't think China would allow North Korea to turn to a representative form of government - ever.  I'd guess they'd be perfectly happy with a single Korean state, all Communist.

South Korea is probably the best example of how it can go.
It took from 1953 to now to get South Korea fully democratic.
There were a lot of struggles between populism and authoritarianism
throughout those decades.
Authoritarianism is deeply rooted in Asian culture.
It will take at least two generations to transform the culture.

I've been saying that China likes to have North Korea around
to do the dirty jobs for which China doesn't want to be blamed.

Maybe China is becoming more civilized.
Maybe China is deciding that they have no use for such a henchman anymore.
Maybe China has decided that they can out-compete everyone economically,
and doesn't want a loose cannon like North Korea
threatening to make a mess of the world.

I agree on this point. The same crowd has been in total control for multiple generations. There is not anybody living there today who has really ever had the opportunity or responsibility of making decisions. The culture of capitalism and democracy is foreign to what they have ever seen it will take a long time.

Another good point you made is that maybe China feels they can compete economically on the world stage. The Chinese are quite smart and have probably figured out communism and capitalism do not mix. They have given their population a taste of capitalism and that toothpaste cannot be put back into the tube.

For NK to change, China has to reform first, stop fearing the outside world as the enemy.
But as long as china's phobias exist, NK will always be a poverty ridden puppet. NK is the buffer between the evils of the Western world and china itself, much like a frightened child in the night hiding safely under his blanket from the monsters in the dark.
It's not so much a generational issue, as it is millennia of isolation.

Unlike the rest of us, Solar, you have a unique perspective on North Korea.

Kinda *suspected* NK was some kind of Chinese buffer, based on the numerous times China flew fighters into NK to engage US air planes.
Then the huge ground forces that seemingly emerged out of "nowhere" and almost went unchecked across the whole nation.

North Korea is to China, like the Golan Heights is to Israel.... a buffer zone.   the last place I'd want to live.

Truth be told, North Korea is the "Laboratory rat cage" of China's Communism.   How far can you push these people in utter poverty and deprivation before they rebel... and how to stop them when they do.  In fact, I'll bet the Chinese watched those military parades and wondered, "What do we need to do, to get our people in such a patriotic spirit?  That little fat guy has done better than we ever expected!"

Reminds me of Hillary Clinton speaking admiringly of Cristina Kirchner (Argentina) during the height of her power, 'a true woman of power, in a world of men.'

A puppet is no good if you can't control him. North Korea's position with China has been Deeply reduced by the unpredictable actions of the little fat crazy guy! Soon it will get to the point that removing and replacing him with someone more stable would be in china's interest. If China leaves it to the US and south Korea they could lose their influence over a united Korea!
I think China will act!

I guess it's a testament to complete control over all information and how a true communist state can, as you put it, "Laboratory rat cage", mold the populace into whatever you want.
They also believe to a certain extent that beyond the DMZ lies great evils, that is, unless you are some of the privileged few with connections to SK.
But for the most part, the majority of NK are kept in the dark and taught to believe Americans are evil slaveholders through Capitalism.
I try and keep up with what is happening in the area and read the horror stories of the few that escape from time to time. The one telling story is how they live in abject fear of the govt, but Kim is all loving as their true savior.

I guess in truth, it's the same story for every dictatorship throughout history, just hard to believe in what we consider the enlightened and modern era, such a horror still exists, which brings us to China and it's selfish need to keep NK functioning at all costs.

The puppet is doing exactly as instructed, don't believe the Kabuki theater the press and China want you to swallow.
Kim does exactly what he is told, even when he acts like the spoiled impulsive child he is, he still knows he only exists at the pleasure of China.

If you look at any picture of the young Kim, you'll see the exact same skinny old handler behind him every time, this guy answers directly to China, he is the intermediary between the child and the old leadership of China and if things don't go the way China dictates....
Well suffice it to say, it will always go the way of China. They will tell him to rein him in or replace him if the kid gets out of hand.
When it comes to NK, it's a product of China plain and simple.

Search out "Kim's handlers in North Korea". There is a lot written on the subject, but suffice it to say, it reads like an amazing plot, as in who controls the Mafia?

Then Trump did exactly the right thing by calling the Chinese President out on The little fat crazy guy! If it is determined that Kim has outlived his usefulness he is dead man Walking! China is in a great place right now to replace the little shit with a new(leader) and earn the praise of the world by doing it! It is almost to the point that Kim may be worth more to them dead them alive!
