Amazon's Detroit site to hire 1,600
« on: June 28, 2017, 04:57:28 PM »
Romulus is a western suburb of Detroit, and the location of Detroit Metropolitan Airport. As mentioned, it's only a quarter-mile from Interstate 94, and relatively near I-75 going up the entire state. Moreover, it's close to UPS major distribution hubs (airborne and surface).

It's a brilliant business choice, and splendid for lowering state unemployment figures, although I can't agree with the state spending money to get them to come here. Whenever that happens, things get dragged out far longer than they have to.

LANSING — The Michigan Strategic Fund on Tuesday approved a $5 million grant for Amazon.com's planned $140 million package fulfillment center in Romulus — the second state subsidy for the world's largest online retailer in the past seven months.

Amazon is promising to create at least 1,600 new jobs, but needed state assistance to help pay for "substantial road and other infrastructure improvements," according to a Michigan Economic Development Corp. memo to Strategic Fund board members.

The company plans to use 84 acres north of Detroit Metropolitan Airport, bounded roughly by Smith, Vining and Ecorse roads — with quick acccess to I-94.

"That's the attractiveness of this site — it's less than a quarter of the mile from the building and they'll be on a major east-west highway," said Rob Luce, executive director of the Detroit Region Aerotropolis Development Corp.

When it opens, the facility will be Amazon's third in Wayne County, after a distribution warehouse under construction in Livonia. Together, the two fulfillment centers are expected to create about 2,600 jobs in the county.

Finally, some good news for Detroit. I hope it's not too little late.

Finally, some good news for Detroit. I hope it's not too little late.

Downtown Detroit has undergone a remarkable change these last few years. The infamous old Cass Corridor of druggies and hookers has been replaced by upscale apartments and major construction for sports arenas and more.

As for the two Amazon centers, if it's anything like the auto company openings, for every 30 applicants only one might actually get interviewed. Seasonal hiring is starting (Sears forgot it was going under and now wants help, for one). All the Social Justice Warriors are still waiting to be Barista of the Year at Starbarfs. Life stumbles on.
