WASHINGTON—Attorney General William Barr has appointed a U.S. attorney to examine the origins of the Russia investigation and determine if intelligence collection involving the Trump campaign was "lawful and appropriate," a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Monday.

Barr appointed John Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut, to conduct the inquiry, the person said. The person could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Durham's appointment comes about a month after Barr told members of Congress that "spying did occur" on the Trump campaign in 2016. He later said he was gathering a team to look into the origins of the special counsel's investigation.

In his reference to spying, Barr appeared to be alluding to a surveillance warrant the FBI obtained on a former Trump associate, Carter Page, and the FBI's use of an informant while the bureau was investigating former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos.

Durham is a career prosecutor who was nominated for his post as U.S. attorney in Connecticut by Trump. He has previously investigated law enforcement corruption, the destruction of CIA videotapes, and the Boston FBI office's relationship with mobsters.

In nominating him, the White House said Durham and other nominees for U.S. attorney jobs share Trump's vision for "making America safe again."

Obama is insulated. My gut tells me Valerie Jarrett and Susan Rice would fall on the sword for Obama. Personally, I would enjoy seeing Clapper and Brennan squirm.

Agree about jarrett and rice. Don't know if comey would fall on the sword, or mccabe. Comey still acts/ believes he can explain his way out of this. Plus, he ain't too smart. Don't think he was ever in obama's inner circle so would not be surprised to see jarrett, rice, and obama try to pin all of this on him. Guessing this will happen fast now. Would not be surprised if this next election is long over before it begins, but I am still hoping hillary runs again.

Yeah, same here. I could see Hillary driving the sword through Obozo, he did after all, screw her the first time around to get elected, and made the atmosphere so toxic, that no Dim could get elected after what he did.

This could turn into a rock fight that will be more entertaining than the 2020 democrat nomination process. We are not exactly dealing with a lot of folks with outstanding character. I have never seen a brawl of rattlesnakes and I am looking forward to it.

We use to have dirt clod fights in the field when we were kids, and there was one ass in the group that would eventually throw one with a rock in it, then what was just all in fun, turns into a full blown rock fight, ending in a full on brawl and kids crying and parents laughing.

Nothing ever changes, the Dim children will without doubt, start throwing rocks and the adults will laugh the entire time when the crying starts.
