The president has to win the support of the American people before he does much more than we have done with sanctions.

The Democrats will side with the propaganda of Russia, Iran and China if Trump does what we'd all like him to do.  Even if enough Dems support him, they will use his actions as a cudgel against him in the 2020 election, just as they did with the Iraq War when most of the Dems voted for it.

The smart move may very well be to continue to put economic pressure on Russia, China, Iran and Cuba.
That's exactly what is going on and why Pompeo is meeting with his Russian counterpart, to explain to the Russians why this isn't in their best interests.

QuoteIf we lose the Presidency, the US may go socialist and eventually we become Venezuela.

https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/05/democrats-split-in-responses-to-venezuela-crisis/

BTW, Juan Guaidó is a Socialist, while Mudero is a full blown Communist Dictator.  The people of Venezuela are socialists who are not likely to turn away from wanting the government to take care of them.  They just don't like it under this Dictator!  We must proceed with caution.  In many ways, the people of Venezuela are reaping what they have sewn, just as we will if we allow our nation to elect a Marxist who call themselves a Democrat Socialist.  The threat of socialism in our own country on the eve of a national election makes foreign intervention pretty dicey.  The President could certainly "be more flexible after the election" but it's a long time until November! (2020)
I disagree, VZ was one of the richest countries in the world, their experience with socialism if far shorter than that of the US, most remember what it was like to have electricity, running water, jobs, etc.
That's the world they want back, not an oppressive govt placing strings and conditions on everything they do in their daily lives.

And yes, Guiado is a socialist, but that is no guarantee he will institute the old rule, sometimes it's better to step aside and let the water takes its natural path. He will look like a genius if he allows life to follow a natural path.

I'm only urging caution.  Hell, in my gut and in my heart, I think we should have finished what we began in the Bay of Pigs, but JFK didn't have the stomach for.

We have never made out very well in any of our efforts in central and south America.  A lot of those who back us and are on our side become brutal gangsters and thugs.  The people recoil towards the Left.  Even our wayward Pope knows what his people are like down there.  What he doesn't understand is the difference between American capitalism and Central And South American right wing capitalism. Their history and their culture is very different than our and sometimes political concepts, like words, may have two meanings.

In the end, the only way people become more like us, is if they have a similar history,  Our history had not only a revolution, but a civil war,  It helped define the issues for our ancestors and their children.  We can not become 'helicopter parents' for fledgling democracies.  That doesn't mean we can't help them, but the fight is mostly theirs and far to often we make these fights ours.

My point was, we don't need to be their in the physical, rather we are dealing with this issue in an external matter. Iran, Russia, Cuba and China are interfering in South America, Right?
Now, look at trump's economic policies towards Russia, China and Cuba, the very thing that scares the shit out of them, then there's Iran and the straight of Hormuz and their threat to close it, this divides Russian support for Iran.
Point being, Trump is playing a serious game of "Corner the Rat" and winning. China will do as Trump demands to get these sudden tariffs dropped, which means they put pressure on Russia. Cuba can't afford a blockade on trade because Russia still foots the Bill for their very existence and Russia can't afford to keep the commie regime afloat.

We seem to be on the same page.  I do think there are some who would like us to go in there and clean the rats out, as Reagan did in Grenada.  President Trump is playing 3D chess and he is looking to put external pressure on those hostile state actors that are creating these proxy flash points of this new cold war.  At a certain point they will see it is in their best own interests to pull out of Venezuela.  They also may decide propping up Syria and N. Korea to finger f**k with Trump is not worth the punishment of sanctions and undeclared economic warfare that Team Trump is leveraging against them.

Good description, "New Cold War", and as usual, it is being fought by proxy. I couldn't ask for a more level headed leader to take these scum on.

We, the oldsters, need to educate the youngsters about the lessons learned during the first cold war. It's all about alliances and spheres of influence and proxies being used as flash points which may escalate into armed conflict.  It's a global game of whack a mole!  Just deciding not to play is not a winning strategy, since it leaves a power vacuum, which sucks in evildoers (or whatever you want to call our adversaries who are potential enemies)

Exactly!!
The world is full of evil people, simply walking away and ignoring a problem tells our foes we're cowards and they can pretty much do as they please.
Trump is taking them head on and by the dozens.

You make a good point about us old farts. That's why I've kept this thread updated, to educate. There are a lot of young people out there completely clueless as to how the world works.
After 8 years of war under Obozo, an entire generation might grow weary and want to play LIBertarian and pull our troops back home and close the door. Nothing could be worse for the country, abandoning our allies.
Sadly, the US is it, there is no other Nation on earth that's willing to make the communists back off and leave peaceful Nations alone. I hate it, but that's just the way it is.

The former Cold War KGB Field Agent (Spy) and Head of the KGB wants to regain the power of the former Soviet Union.  He is using kleptocracy and croany capitalism, similar to how the Communist Chinese have been successfully pretending to be capitalist, while they are committed, Godless, evil Communists!   Putin could change his nation back to being Communist with the stroke of his pen.  Perhaps, when they have enough power, that is the plan!

I can't stop remembering the Comintern and the international May Day celebrations, both in Communists States and in overt demonstrations of solidarity with one world communism, in western democracies.

Perhaps, all that's changed is not the movement for one world communism, but the means to achieve that end.  Commies now pretend to be something other than who and what they are.

In spite of their differences, China and Russia are a whole lot alike and the enemies of their enemies are their friends!  World Wars happen with such evil alliances!

Amazing how today's democrats mirror this description.
