You Were Right. I Am Now A Conservative

Just putting this up from my thread down below. I've had a crazy few days. I wrote about this on another board but wanted to share here. In case you don't feel like reading, in short: I made a bet with a conservative friend of mine about the results of the last round of caucuses. As a result, I had to go "work" for him for a few days. It was mostly harmless things. i had to run errands for him, wear a Trump hat around campus, light my "Bernie" sign on fire outside and the like.

Most importantly, I also met my friend's dad. His dad is very successful and owns a food processing equipment manufacturing company. (He worked at the company and bought it from the owners when they sold. And then he reconfigured a bunch of equipment and got patents on them and expanded the business.) He's super conservative, but only really cares about financial issues. He sat me down and told me his thoughts about Bernie's policies and set me straight. He told me:

1) He said that most of his employees, even entry level ones, are fairly skilled and start off above $15/hour. But they sometimes might need temporary help, and some of those employees make minimum wage or below $15/hour. He said there was no way he could justify paying someone $15/hour "to shuffle some papers around if one of the secretaries takes off" or for someone to sweep up the floors.

He then said the worst part about a $15/hr minimum wage was that it keeps people from getting their first jobs. And this keeps people from getting experience. And, also, people make higher wages as work longer. He also said that he was going to put it bluntly, but a lot of people "stuck" working minimum wage jobs really don't have much of a choice of what they make anyways. A lot don't speak English, have criminal histories or related problems, or are just flat-out not capable of having any form of meaningful employment. He has a friend who owns a few Burger King franchises and it's apparently a big problem just to get people to do things like calling into the manager when they're out sick. He said that, unless there wasn't a rule in place, a lot of minimum wage workers would make way less than what they make now.

And he said that at $15/hour, no one in their right mind would keep staffing levels where they're at now. And every actual restaurant he said would also run into a lot of problems, too.

2) He said that he's in the highest tax bracket right now (no crap). He said that being in the highest bracket was $400,000 and he paid about 40% of his income in taxes already. (I had no idea.) He said his income tax would go up under Bernie's plan by a few percentage points, depending on how his business did and how his accountant handled things.

He then talked to me about his cigars. He said he knew something like that was a big luxury, along with his Escalade. And golf club membership. But he said he enjoys nice things, and sees nothing wrong with it. Cutting into his income means less of those. And he said in theory that sounds fine. But he told me that someone owns the cigar shop and the guy who works at the car dealership works on a commission. He told me to quote him on this: "No matter what anyone says, rich people buy things. And those things give people jobs."

There was a bunch more, but that's the big summary. I took notes for the meeting as part of the bet.

(I'll continue in the next post.)

So I thought a lot about the past few days. I ended up calling my friend's dad. I went to his office.

So I told him he was right. About being a Republican. But, most importantly, about being wealthy and being proud of being wealthy, and not wanting to give up what he owns. He made it for himself. And he laughed again and said that he knew there was something I wanted to say. So I told him.

I just flat-out said that I want to be rich. And that the best way for people to become rich and successful is if our country had a system in place to better reward people who took chances. And that Bernie's ideas would do nothing but bankrupt the people who actually make things to reward people who don't deserve them.

This was obviously music to his ears. A huge smirk on his face. And I'll never forget what he said.

"No one wants to admit it, but a---holes like me run the world. And once you realize that, you can have that, too. Welcome to the darkside." (He has a really tongue-in-cheek sense of humor.)  Then he said if I wanted to intern at his place he had room for me starting in a few weeks. So I think I'm going to do that.

He actually went to our college and is on some board at the business school. He's going to set me up with the dean over there to explore my academic options later on today. He said that he'd help and give me some suggestions, too. I might just let him register me for classes.

Just wanted to let everyone know the end results of my experience.

Sounds like you found a fine mentor, stick with it, being rich comes with lots of responsibility, but you'll love it and the freedoms it affords.

Thanks to you and everyone else here for giving me well-deserved crap.

I went to my friend's house as part of the wager. His dad knew about it and thought it was hilarious. I had to do a lot of errands for them (getting dinner, cleaning the inside of his car, scrubbing floors). One of the things I had to do was bring him his drink and cigar (and my friend a beer). Just watching him enjoy life and explain to me how he arrived to that place... it really looked like a nice life to lead.

He said he's had offers to sell his business for over $10 million. He's holding on in case his son wants to take it over one day. But if not, he's going to retire with an insane amount of money. That's definitely I want steering me through life.

You are to be congratulated for being open minded enough to look at what is going on in the real world. You don't realize it, but you just moved yourself past 90% of your peers when it comes to achieving your goals. Now comes the difficult part as you will be ridiculed for your beliefs among many. Stay strong. It takes courage to be successful. Hopefully you stay checked in here for support and the truth.

As a cigar aficionado, I concur with his life perspective of enjoying the little things.
But people like Bernie want to tax these "little things" in life, and for what?
I used to buy the best cigars on the mkt for under $3. a stick, now that same cigar costs more than $10. a pop all because of taxes and penalties, and if left unimpeded, Bernie will follow the Bloomberg lunacy of taxing snacks.

It's this micromanagement of our lives by Marxists that removes our Liberties one by one in the name of "the children" and their future.
Fact is, their future will have less freedomm, more govt control. Our Founders are turning in their graves at the stupidity of the masses in relinquishing their Liberties.

I hate to say this. But it's the truth.

If money is your primary motivation in life. If you think "being rich" is what it's all about.

Hate to be the one to break it to you, but you are in for a very disappointing life.

And if that's what motivates you, you are right where you belong with the DNC and the likes of Clinton and Sanders.

The accumulation of personal wealth is what motivates the leftists of the lib DNC.

Not Conservatives.

The accumulation of personal wealth is just an added benefit, a side effect of sorts if you will, of being a conservative.

One of every five Americans you meet has a mental illness of some sort. Many, many, of our veteran's suffer from mental illness like PTSD now also. Help if ya can. :) http://www.projectsemicolon.org/share-your-story.html

I found this to be quite amusing. Who is it that always supports tax breaks for the wealthy? Who is it that supports corporate welfare?

The very basis for the "accumulation of personal wealth" is the "conservative" ideology.

It is also a distortion, or perversion if you prefer, of the ideology of the Founders, and Christ.

You've been brainwashed.  If you bring Christ into the conversation, "Thou shalt not Covet" comes to mind, also referred to as ENVY, another sin.

The foundation for Conservative Ideology is the liberty outlined in the Bill of Rights.

There is nothing wrong with accumulation of wealth. His post was about obsessing with that as a goal. Before you start criticizing folks on this board I suggest you stick around and read some posts. Most of us support tax reform for ALL. Also corporate welfare is a bi-partisan endeavor.

I think you have a misunderstanding of what conservativism is.

As to a perversion of Christ, conservatives are the most generous in both charity and their time.
