Report: Vietnam, Chinese ships fire water cannons
Associated Press
By CHRIS BRUMMITT 1 hour ago

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — A Vietnamese patrol boat and several Chinese vessels blasted each other with water cannons Monday near an oil rig recently positioned by Beijing in disputed waters, Vietnamese state media reported, in the latest incident in a dangerous standoff between the two nations.

The Tuoi Tre newspaper said it was the first time that Vietnamese vessels have responded to aggressive Chinese actions close to the deep sea rig, which was positioned May 1 in an area of the South China Sea claimed by Beijing and Hanoi. Both sides have accused the other of ramming ships. Vietnam has presented a video showing Chinese ships hitting its vessels.

In Washington, Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday the U.S. and other nations involved in navigating in the South and East China Seas were deeply concerned about the "aggressive" Chinese action.

Associated Press writer Zhao Liang in Beijing contributed to this report.

Vietnam has demanded that China pull back the rig. China has refused, saying the waters are its "inherent territory."

This is exactly what China will say when they invade Taiwan.  It will be called an "internal dispute" and they'll compare it to the USA sending in army units if Alaska were to secede from the union.

China could invade Vietnam right now and completely get away with it.  Would the US fight the chinese over a communist country that beat us?  Nope.  And especially with a commie pacifist like Obama as CinC, that's a double nope.

There is a distinct possibility that this conflagration will get blown way out of proportion by the chinese because they are eager to flex their muscles in this region, and they got their asses kicked by the Vietnamese army in 1979.  They would end up with one of the largest warm water ports in the world and de facto hegemony over the China Sea.

A Chinese 'fishing-vessel' (yep, we're all just innocently fishing out here) rammed and sank a Vietnamese fishing-trawler near that same disputed oil-rig yesterday.  Then steamed-away like beer-blitzed weekend-warriors.  I hope China finds time to squeeze-in 'safe boating' classes when they're not colliding with Philippine fishing-barques, entangling Japanese fishing-nets, and bumping-into Taiwanese catch-tenders.

Even we behave better than that, on Lake Erie.

The Chinese haven't been in a ground war since Korea (and it didn't go well for them).  Even without the stupid ROE we had to deal with, they will not have an easy time with VN or Taiwan.

Of course they are, China knows the U.S. isn't going to intervene on Nam's behalf, as we did after the French abandoned them and left the U.S. holding the bag.

Watch next it will be Taiwan.

On a side note I did find it interesting that just a week prior, China "exported" most of it's nationals out of the nation.

Things that make ya go hmmm, and really do look like a prelude to war.

If I were in charge of the board in China, I'd be invading Nam by now.  And I would expect Obama to pay a special visit to apologize for frustrating my country so much to the point that we were forced to invade.  The concessions would be the handover of Taiwan, like the Allies did for Sudetenland.  "Peace in our time".
