NEAR LOS INDIOS - Gaps in the border fence run throughout the U.S.-Mexico border. A proposal out of Washington, D.C., wants to fill in gaps in the Rio Grande Valley and the rest of the frontier.

The border fence is one of many tools the government uses to secure it. Border Patrol agents said the gaps are used to funnel illegal traffic into more rural areas. Others who live near them said otherwise.

It only takes a couple of minutes to escape through a gap in the border fence in the Valley.

In one instance, drug smugglers from Mexico used a gap near San Benito to get away. They were able to get out of a van and cross the river. Once on the other side, they fired at Border Patrol agents.

A couple of miles away from the place are two large gaps near Los Indios.

Los Indios Mayor Rick Cavasos explained a part of the fence was not completed by the government.

"I'm not sure what happened there, whether it was a funding issue but the gaps are still here and the purpose of these gaps where for the gates," he said.

He said those gates would help secure the area, but they never became a reality.

No doubt there will be a lot of work involved figuring out what was built and what was left unfinished when the "Secure Fence Act of 2006" first went into effect, only to be denied funding later. From there plans will be formed how best to proceed to finish the sections already started, and to begin construction on the next parts. Meanwhile it makes sense to concentrate patrols on the weak areas (gaps) - at least now that patrols actually mean doing something besides escorting crossers to the nearest welfare office.

Yeah, what's this catch and release shit? What they wind up doing is giving them a ride into town in an air-conditioned vehicle to see their kids, then a ride back when they see them walking in the desert.
Sounded more like a glorified babysitting service than anything.

Better than the "toe poppers", The Betty's could take out a whole squad.

Catch and release is being changed by new orders coming from DHS and the WH.  New policies will catch bunches by surprise as they come through the gaps.

"You have a choice, folks.  You can turn around now, peacefully, or we'll cuff you and toss you back over where there isn't a gap! And, no, you cannot press 2 for EspaƱola!"

Looking at the road in the pic, it's quite apparent the road sees heavy use.
Can you imagine the look on the faces of smugglers, border jumpers etc, when they roll up and there's a contingency of officers waiting to escort them?
No doubt this will be one of the areas that will see some of those 10 thousand new highers.
