Plus, he is free to go work somewhere else and still receive his full pension.

Quote
Scot Peterson, the sheriff’s deputy vilified for failing to confront the Parkland school shooter, has begun receiving a state pension of $8,702.35 a month.

Peterson resigned and retired Feb. 22, a week after the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where he waited outside as Nikolas Cruz killed 17 people and wounded 17 others.

Peterson began to receive his pension in April, according to the Florida Department of Management Services. He can receive the payments for the rest of his life.

The 55-year-old Peterson, a Broward deputy for 32 years, was paid $101,879.03 last year — $75,673.72 in base salary plus overtime and other compensation, according to sheriff’s office records. Until the shooting, he was considered a trusted school resource officer at Stoneman Douglas, according to annual reviews of his performance.

Following orders doesn't necessarily make him the bad guy here, that was the leftist sheriff that set this ball in motion when he made his deputies stand down..

You're absolutely right but gun shots in a school? I'm not saying he should be punished for following orders but gun shots in a school! He's a cop, he has a gun and he is supposed to protect the people.

That order would have been given to the responding deputies, not to the @sshole on school grounds at the moment that it happened!

Or do you think this @asshole heard gunshots and just stood around, calling his superiors asking what he should do?

That is not how real cops are trained.

I'm not excusing his behavior, but you have to remember, he worked for this dept. for 30 years and had it pounded into his head that he'd be punished if he went against protocol.
Bottomline, he's old, technically speaking, out of shape and a coward.
No, it's not how most men would react, but we don't know the browbeating these deputies underwent under this so called sheriff's command and his policies.
They have yet to release all the details of that day, but I expect to see this sheriff run out of law enforcement and face civil suits.
He is solely responsible for these kids deaths, not the NRA or a coward deputy, but the commanding officer micromanaging a horrific event.

This whole situation has so many mistakes and exposes the problem with government.  I agree with the post that to have survived the BS in the department for 30 years means he understood "the rules" and he hid behind those rules. The sheriff has been proven to be a leftist political hack. The deputy's individual courage can certainly be questioned. However, we cannot begrudge his pension being 55 with 30 years' service. It all just stinks when put together.

Exactly!
I will never second guess an individuals decision making compared to mine. I, myself, have always risen to the occasion where a life was endangered, but I was an athlete and damn near indestructible, but today with a burnt heart, I'm relegated to the sidelines or die trying, and no, I have no fear of death, but I'd personally be in the way and be just one more victim for someone else to help. Was he a coward, not ready to die, knew he'd be more of a danger? We'll never know.
I have a feeling, all his training, or in this case, brainwashing made him question his decision making. I don't know, but to work in a shitty dept like that for 30 years, had to play a part.

Hmm...  I would question the state pension of $8,702.35 a month.

This is the shit the Dims pulled with Unions in all states, it's why so many states will eventually be bankrupt for their unfunded pension systems, it was a power grab, and the gop'E turned a blind eye because they were in on it.
Just look at Ca, on the verge of collapse and they're doing nothing to slow it down.
Some people make 100% of their salary after retirement, teachers Unions are the worst.

Nailed it! Unions and politicians negotiating with someone else's money is a sure lose for the citizens.

Yep, and one day that chit will come due and people will suffer, question why their pensions are being cut.
Govt bails out Wall St, the claim? They were too big to fail, yeah, the RINO lie, but take people's money away, and what will they claim?
The old socialists' belief, stolen from Dickens, "The Needs of the Many Outweigh the Needs of the Few".

This exposes the drift from a capitalist system to that of a near-socialist system, thanks to the efforts of the leftist gop Establishment and their feigned approach to stopping it.

There is a Lot of truth to what you are saying, cops get it pounded into them the directives of the "upper Brass" the more leftist they are the worse the pounding . I had to deal with that my entire career.  If you were to take a survey of Cops across the country, both retired and serving you would likely get the same answer.

That said, I see in this Sheriff Israel a real tool of the left.  Cruz should have been arrested, several times over, but Nooooo! the Sheriff had to make sure his minions adhered to Precious Hussein's edict from the oval office about "School discipline".

None of this excuses the fact Peterson is a coward, he gravitated to this cushy assignment rather than have to be out on the street and deal with real criminals, that and because of the Plethora of overtime.

Exactly Billy!

What makes this even more heinous, is the kids loved this guy, he gave the impression cops are caring individuals and have only the kids safety in mind.
Boy, did he screw that one up? Yes, he is a coward and should be personally/civilly held liable along with the sheriff and made to pay out of pocket.
I just can't even put myself in his place, as I'm sure you can't either. In all my years dealing with all forms of law enforcement, I've never seen such a display of cowardice, ever.
Even first responders run in burning buildings to save animals.
