Title: New York Times news staff walkout
Post by: quiller on June 30, 2017, 04:06:03 AM
Staff cuts --- for awhile --- at the New York Slimes.

QuoteJournalists at the New York Times staged a brief demonstration outside their office Thursday to protest planned cuts to the newspaper's copy editing staff.

At 3 p.m. ET, dozens of reporters and editors gathered outside holding placards that read: "We kneed are editors! They make us look smart!" and "Copy editors save our butts," and "This sign wsa not edited."

Times employees said that the decision to cut the copy desk -- which many described as an important line of defense against grammatical mistakes, factual errors and oversights that could compromise fairness and balance -- was done with little to no input from the staff.

    Fairness? Balance? Oh----so NOW we know who to blame!

In actuality the company expects to hire some 100 reporters (presumably some from among the ranks of these soon-to-be-unemployed).

A RIF (reduction in force) is not a democratic process. Snowflakes!

I guess the walkout and standing on the street was just practice for when they're unemployed.

Good copy editors are worth their weight in diamonds, and when you have a noose-paper which daily churns out THAT much bilge in so few pages, mistakes inevitably do occur.

Even the Slimes gets a limited break on that general topic, except for the way some of their corrections can go three and four times over the same initial story. These are infamously "corrected" in tiny type, tucked away on page 407-B, inevitably blaming any errors on the copy editor and not the reporter. It takes a major Jayson Blair style scandal to go any higher on their editorial food-chain --- a lockstep circlejerk evading responsibility at every step.

That said: forcing writers to actually read what they write before shoving it off onto an unsuspecting public? How fascist (or something). And what about all those editors? Edit what --- publicity handouts from PETA, the UN and every enemy America even suspects it has?

Forgot this link --- to Associated Press copy editors who saw fit to liken porcupine sex to health care negotiations. Because equivalency!

If the NYT copy editors left the building ... was it to hop a flight to Atlanta (CNN)?   :woot:  I hear they have a couple of new openings.
