My wife's G Granddad on here mother side was a medicine man.

The thing he most pushed me to learn was what he called "Truck patch", found out later in Central America it's called "milpa", basic survival growing to feed many. He hammered it into me. "Boy you've never seen hard times, this will feed you and your family". I still remember very well those lessons, they were from the Cherokee, and virtually the same as milpa except the Cherokee incorporated the hog into the art which vastly improved it.

We spent a week cleaning out her grandmother house.   Over half the thing were given to Historical Museums within the state if the kids did not ask for it.

The Re-construction era Klan was in a virtually lawless time and was mostly protecting the widows and orphans from the "Carpetbaggers" and the newly freed "Young Bucks", it dwindled as times got better, then came back in the early 20th century in a very different form, what I like to call the "Progressive Era Klan", which seems to have gone hand in hand with Eugenics thinking of the time.  Most Southerners understand the difference. 

All of which is irrelevant to the fact that the wearing of the hoods by the KKK, as is the case with burning crosses too, was done as a tactic to instill terror, not because they were ashamed or wanted to protect their identities.

The real KKK as a terror org was started by confederate Guerilla leader Nathan Bedford Forest whose vigilante calvarymen (all ex confederates) wore white hoods  on their heads and even hoods on their horses to frighten Blacks, they said they were the ghosts of dead confederate soldiers come back to reclaim their 'redistributed' land etc. and to fight the "freemens" bureau as well as keep assprted miscreants in line.

Then some guy by the name of Pike combined Scottish rites (Burning a cross was a call to summon the Scottish highland clans to war) and greek mithology, Grand Cyclops etc. KU Klux is actually a misspelling of the greek word kuklos for circle.

Then you had the knights of the golden circle which proably started in South Carolina and began hoarding and amassing wealth for a second confederacy, they bought a lot of votes for the Democratic party in the south

Nathan Bedford Forrest was an amazing cavalry man. My GGGrandpa was at the Battle of Ft. Donelson and shortly there after Shiloh. Again notice the Re-Construction era:

"After the war, Forrest is best known as having been a prominent figure in the foundation of the Ku Klux Klan, a group composed of mostly Confederate veterans committed to violent intimidation of blacks, northerners and republicans.  He was "Grand Wizard" until he ordered the dissolution of the organization in 1869.  Forrest died of diabetes in Memphis on October 29, 1877.

AHHHH ALBERT Pike, thanks, I should know these things coz his statue (much to our chagrin) WAS right out in front of DC police HQ 300 Indiana ave NW......we used to get grief over it all the time especially from Farrakhan and Jesse jackson.

Forrest, despite being a holy terror raider and slapdash cavalryman wished to disband the KK BECAUSE IT WAS TOO VIOLENT....
