George Will: if Trump wins nod, vote Cruz anyway

Well, it's a bit more triple-think than the headline suggests, here, but old George is also saying forget rules we wrote elsewhere and long, long ago (in a galaxy, etcetera). Toss out rules, cheat the ones who believe Republicans STICK to what they say. And don't let Trump in the White House.

Will warns a Trump nomination would create "down-ballot carnage" that could end Republican control of the House.

"At least half a dozen Republican senators seeking reelection and Senate aspirants can hope to win if the person at the top of the Republican ticket loses their state by, say, only four points, but not if he loses by 10," Will wrote, saying Trump would be the most unpopular nominee ever.

He calls on voters in upcoming primary states, Indiana and California, to vote for Ted Cruz, to "make the Republican convention a deliberative body rather than one that merely ratifies decisions made elsewhere, some of them six months earlier."

"A  convention's sovereign duty is to choose a plausible nominee who has a reasonable chance to win, not to passively affirm the will of a mere plurality of voters recorded episodically in a protracted process."

He adds, however, that if Trump wins the nomination, the GOP should work instead toward cutting presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton's term to four years.

I ask the question as this subject comes up all the time. Yes, Trump has high negatives, but so does Hillary. There is no question Trump has discovered a base of support that has surprised everyone. Those two factors seem to cancel out. However, it seems to me the pundit class in NY and Washington are ignoring the energy factor which shows democrats way down republican way up. That to me does not add up to a down ticket disaster.

And the General election hasn't even started yet.

I hope that does not translate into low voter turnout again.

I am hopeful there is enough anti Hillary sentiment out there that conservatives will be energized to vote against her.

If the Trumpanzees figure THEIR trash has it in the bag, that exact same mentality will ensure we get Clinton. As it is, voters are starting to realize what a repeat of Obama's empty suit that Trump really is. Truth will win out and we will get President Cruz.
