The Albertsons manager interrupted the conversation between Guadelupe Zamorano and Hermelinda Stevenson to chastise them for the rule they were publicly flouting, right in front of the grocery store. They were speaking Spanish. For months, according to an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission lawsuit filed on behalf of the two women and other minority employees, the San Diego store had an unwritten rule that applied exclusively to the Hispanics and Mexicans who worked there: They could not speak Spanish anywhere on the premises, even if they were on break.
There is a bigger problem on all of them not wanting to learn English, speak English regularly, and teach their children English as well. You can speak Spanish at home. This is business setting.
Break time is their time.
As I see it "unwritten" is the problem for Albertson's.If it was a condition for employment in writing it would be a different matter.
As a former CEO/employer, I totally get it.Different languages spoken within the ranks creates division, distrust. (Hey, you talking about me).Seen full blown fights occur over it, where one group is speaking Spanish, all stop, look at someone and start laughing.Even is it was totally innocent, it's flat out rude to speak so others are excluded.
When I go into town I now hear 5 to 8 languages spoken in stores in an 8hr day. Until Congress get off it's ass and makes English the official language of U.S.A. it will not change. You are going to have rude people speaking English also.
IF it was written the union would have a problem with it.
Are you a Conservative? Show me where Unions have done the right thing? They are Organized Liberal Mafias.
I was a Conservative long before you were a gleam in your mothers eye. All I am saying it would have been a contract issue if it was a written policy. As management I have had to deal with people and unions for over 40 years in my 65 working career. The union would have jumped on it like stink on shit.
