Title: Feds sue Albertsons over store that banned Hispanic employees from speaking Span

QuoteThe Albertsons manager interrupted the conversation between Guadelupe Zamorano and Hermelinda Stevenson to chastise them for the rule they were publicly flouting, right in front of the grocery store.

They were speaking Spanish.

For months, according to an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission lawsuit filed on behalf of the two women and other minority employees, the San Diego store had an unwritten rule that applied exclusively to the Hispanics and Mexicans who worked there: They could not speak Spanish anywhere on the premises, even if they were on break.

I see nothing wrong with it. You are in America. If you are a citizen, you speak English. Everybody speaks English. That is our country's native language.

Liberals, haven't you learned? Now Albertson business will now increase because of this. Does Chic-Fil-A ring a bell to you?

Hmm....  "even if they were on break"

I have a problem with this as break time is their time.

That's like telling me I can only pee at break time.

There is a bigger problem on all of them not wanting to learn English, speak English regularly, and teach their children English as well.

You can speak Spanish at home. This is business setting.

Break time is their time.

As I see it "unwritten" is the problem for Albertson's.

If it was a condition for employment in writing it would be a different matter.

IF it was written the union would have a problem with it.

As a former CEO/employer, I totally get it.
Different languages spoken within the ranks creates division, distrust. (Hey, you talking about me).
Seen full blown fights occur over it, where one group is speaking Spanish, all stop, look at someone and start laughing.
Even is it was totally innocent, it's flat out rude to speak so others are excluded.

When I go into town I now hear 5 to 8 languages spoken in stores in an 8hr day.  Until Congress get off it's ass and makes English the official language of U.S.A. it will not change.  You are going to have rude people speaking English also.

This is about employees, not just someone on the street.

I just reread the 1964 Civil Rights Act, and nowhere does it cover language.
Sounds like more precedence setting via courts adjudicating laws never enacted by Congress.

They don't have to work there. Go work at another supermarket to not be an American. $8.9 million for few bosses telling their employees to speak English is another form of Liberal punishment (just like $130K for not making a gay cake).

On a side note, I have never seen a supermarket have dual bathrooms (separate employees and customers). So, there is no way to prove that the bathroom graffiti was initiated by English speaking employees.

You are right. I can watch porn in the break room. There is no code of conduct while at work.

I was a Conservative long before you were a gleam in your mothers eye.

All I am saying it would have been a contract issue if it was a written policy.  As management I have had to deal with people and unions for over 40 years in my 65 working career.  The union would have jumped on it like stink on shit.

Then you would know that these unions support Liberal causes, never support American values, and would never allow that in their contracts to begin with.

Break time is their time.
Not al breaks are unpaid.  Unpaid breaks are still company time.

Additionally, paid or not, while an employee is on company property, they are subject to company rules whether on the clock or not - especially if in the company uniform, which I know Albertsons employees wear. On the premises, in uniform, they represent the company to the public whether on the clock or not.

But to me, it comes down to basic courtesy - the item of human interaction progs seem to be completely devoid of, since humanism precepts are the entire universe revolves around each and every individual.  But basic courtesy implies to me that if I want to become part of any given society, I should learn the language of that society; as opposed to expecting the entire society to accommodate my laziness.

I agree with everything you just said, and may I add to that I hate to press 1 for English. BUT, in today's world, until our federal government sets the rules against it, employee's can and will speak any language they choose. I hope this changes by the time president Trump leaves office. They were talking to each other, which is allowed.

I do also.  I hope to live to see it in my life time.

It's not all that old...and it's still a sore spot for many americans.   I absolutely despise calling my insurance company and then have to struggle to understand an indian.

I always ask for someone that can speak English.  If they don't like it I don't care.

Well....most businesses, you're still getting paid on breaks, not lunches, but almost always on break, so it's really not their time...

One of the reasons I keep my cable and internet with my local service. I know I am paying a little more, but the all the CS folks are local. I just hope the owners keep it. I know the "big boys" chomping at the bit to get their hands on it.

Just an FYI:
Most Spanish speaking people speak and understand English well. Just just refuse to do so.

DAMN RIGHT!   I used to  work at a 5star hotel in Overland Park.  Interesting how I could carry on a conversation with spanish-speaking employees at lunch and breaks, but when I'd call them on the radio to go clean a room or something.....all of a sudden they couldn't understand me.  Yeah...riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.
