Court: Movie theaters must accommodate deaf-blind patrons
« on: October 07, 2017, 12:21:43 AM »
I originally thought that this was from The Onion.
Unfortunately .. It isn't! :scared:

Quote
Federal disability law requires movie theaters to provide specialized interpreters to patrons who are deaf and blind, an appeals court said Friday.

The Philadelphia-based 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Cinemark, the nation’s third-largest movie chain, in a case involving a Pennsylvania man who wanted to see the 2014 movie “Gone Girl” and asked a Cinemark theater in Pittsburgh to supply a “tactile interpreter.” The theater denied his request.

The plaintiff, Paul McGann, is a movie enthusiast who reads American Sign Language through touch. He uses a method of tactile interpretation that involves placing his hands over the hands of an interpreter who uses sign language to describe the movie’s action, dialogue and even the audience response.

That'll end the movie theater industry overnight!   I thought it would be the crappy movies, bad remakes and the public finally saying "ENOUGH" to leftist actors.  Nope, some guy demanding his own PRIVATE interpreter to enjoy a movie...?  A tactile interpreter?  Playing "patty fingers" with the viewer...?   Where do they come up with this nonsense?

Imagine the CO$T of hiring these tactile interpreters, and having them available for the showings!   What do they get paid?  $50 an hour?  Is it by the showing?

In an effort to provide "equal access" for all people, the ADA is costing a fortune, and preventing businesses from ever getting started.
Through over-regulation, rules & senseless, just sue or take away the opportunity to choose by eliminating choices.
Striving to make everyone equal, in race, in income & gender - thanks to idiots, we keep telling ourselves, "they have good intentions at heart."    I'm beginning to wonder if they really do, or they're bent on making everyone miserable.

I vote that they're bent on making everyone miserable!  Good grief hubby and I have a theater near us that only charges $4.99 per ticket for first run movies ... it gets us out of the house for a bit ... with this stupid regulation coming down the pike; it's going to hike prices up big time.

I thought that most theaters already had accommodations for the hearing impaired?

Two things.

1) Theaters are supposed to keep interpreters on payroll in the off chance a deaf/person shows up?

2) This idiot wanted to see "Gone Girl"? No one wanted to see Gone Girl. The only people who goe to Ben Affleck films is Ben Affleck.

If the patron is blind & deaf....?  I suppose... since the interpreter is already touching the patron, start kissing them.  If they can't figure it out from there, get a hotel.
