Boo, Did You Do This?
« on: December 27, 2017, 02:59:52 PM »

Swiss police have evacuated a train over what turned out to be an amateur cook's abandoned suitcase full of kitchen knives.

St. Gallen canton (state) police say they stopped the train in Rorschach in northeastern Switzerland on Tuesday evening after the suitcase decorated with the words "8-tung gefaehrlich — Waffe" ("Warning, dangerous — Weapon") and illustrations of what appeared to be explosions was found.

There was also a phone number on the case. Officers tracked down the owner and brought him to the scene to open the luggage.

Police said Wednesday the owner told them he had forgotten the case when he got off the train at an earlier stop in Landquart. He said the alarming decor was meant to put his children off opening it.

Are you saying Boo is only a amateur cook?

If Boo's like me I would not forgotten knives.  I have knives my wife does not even use.  I keep her knives sharp so she don't need my knives.

Me too. It's a guy thing I think, then again, Toy is afraid of my big ass butcher knife.
If I know Boo, his knives are handcuffed to his wrist. A good knife set starts in the thousands.
I use two knives myself, a butcher knife for everything, and a serrated steak knife, all the others just get in the way.

I have 10 knifes in all, two I got on my own over 75 years ago.   The other 8 were given to me over the year when cook's passed away.  I have a grandson that attended culinary school, they will go to him when it my time.

Same here, I have a pretty good set, but honestly, I never use most them, with the exception of the bread knife.
My dad gave me his carbon steel butcher knife, his dad gave him, about 100 years old, holds a damn good edge, but it's so worn, it looks more like a fish hook.
I didn't have the heart to tell him'it'll just sit in the drawer.

         I read that original article and had a good chuckle too!

As far as knives, we got a nice (expensive) set of Wusthof knives +30 years ago, 'cause I got tired of sharpening the cheap stuff on a weekly basis.   The only mistake I ever made was loaning them out to a guy to butcher a deer, who used the bread knife to cut the legs off.  (yes, he ruined it, I converted it into a nice long carving knife).

Can't imagine ever going back to a cheap kitchen knife set, even when these are 'dull' they still outperform other knives, and when they're sharp, they're like razor blades smoothly slicing through the toughest and finest meats.  They don't look like they'd be as strong as they are - pretty expensive for us, but they've outlasted a lot of other tools in the kitchen.

That's the thing, a good expensive set will last a lifetime if taken care of.
I think I've probably given away dozens of cheap sets, the 50 dollar type that comes in a wooden block, looks really pretty, but.
I regifted 3 sets over the years, think I even gave a different set to people that gave me a set years prior.

But hey, it's the thought that counts, right?

With a little grinding and silver spray paint, a penny becomes a dime.

You beat yours too?

Yeah, if I had a set like yours, they'd be under lock and key surrounded by a minefield.

And I don't use most of them. I use my Chinese cleaver for most everything. I also have a long serrated knife and a boning knife. Those are the three I use. The rest just look really cool on the wall with one of those magnetic knife holders. Basically I have two grand in culinary decorations.

I knew it! I have a shit load of tools but seem to gravitate towards a chosen few, but thousands in tools and every one of them becomes a hammer.
Like you, I too find that one knife will suffice for virtually all my needs.
I find it interesting that the clever is your go to choice because I've known other chefs that preferred it as well. One chef, an East Indian cook (arrogant prick) even used his like a spatula on the grill, but then, it was a huge kitchen grill.

I found it to be a bit wieldy myself, never could grasp its thickness/width of the blade, seemed a bit tall, which is why I prefer the butcher knife, but in truth, I've never ever used a high quality cleaver, just the cheap shit and they felt really floppy to me.
