Title: Stay Away From Cake
Post by: kramarat on August 16, 2012, 05:23:35 AM
My 5 year old daughter likes the band "Cake". I have to admit, some of their songs are a little catchy.

I thought it was a harmless rock band. Nothing to worry about.......................until I heard this song last weekend. Here are the lyrics, and you can listen to the song on youtube. The message is crystal clear. The CD has been smashed and thrown away.

What a bunch of complete idiots!!! Worse than athiests, it appears that they have acknowledged God, and chosen satan as a better path. Good luck with that.

There seems to be a small consensus that this isn't about satan, but a badass car. I disagree. Either way, my daughter won't be listening to it.

I have never heard of cake, at this stage of my kids lives, my kids listen to the contemporary Christian radio station.  Two reasons, I like the music and agree with MOST of the songs, and I can leave the room or turn it on before bed without any real worry that they would hear anything that might be too grown up for them.  The most scary thing on is the weather report.

If my girls were older and interested in other genres (which is quite possible), I would probably react very similarly to how you did.  Someone's intent in a song is not half as important as how the listener reacts to it, as evidenced by the comments in your link.  If the song opens you up to suggstion, remove that from your life.  Satan is about temptation, what temps one, will not always tempt another.  I personally found that I had to avoid too much of certain genres of music through my teens to early twenties, too much made me edgy and angry.  I happen to be rather sensitive to music.

I like lots of rock music. I guess my problem is, that I don't really listen to the words. In this particular song, " satan is my motor, the only one that understands", is spoken quite clearly. Whether those guys are satanists or not, it's not words that I want my daughter hearing, at this age......................or any age really. I don't consider myself a prude, but direct references to satan don't work for me.

No, I agree with you there.  Some could argue metaphor, but frankly unless a song is about Satan getting getting his butt handed to him, I don't really care to listen.

I do have to give you mad props for something too, when I was young, my parents banned AC/DC in the house, not because they had ever listened and made that decision, but because some news show said they were bad.  At my age, that made me more curious about the music than anything.  I think it says a lot about you that you were willing to look for the lyrics and make your own decision, your reason for forbidding it will be a lot stronger that way.  The way my parents handled that has made the difference in how I handle mine.

Yeah, like, "The devil went down to Georgia", by Charlie Daniels.

Nah, as she gets older, I'm not going to forbid her from listening to certain music. I've listened to all the supposedly bad stuff..........Zeppelin, Zappa, AC/DC, etc., when I was a teenager and older. Forbidding me wouldn't have stopped me.

We typically have Bluegrass playing outside, on the weekends. This was a cd that my neighbor's kid burned for me. The lyrics of that song kinda took me by surprise.

:tounge:  I like that song.  I just always thought it was funny that my parents had no trouble with Metalica, Madonna, Salt n Peppa, or others, but AC/DC, no way lol!

You are what you think about on a daily basis.  This is hard to understand.  If you choose ot have garbage, or good stuff, coming in to your brain you will get a very predictable result.  The Bible says, "as a man thinks in his heart, so is he."

We as parents are guardians of the gates for our children so we need to be aware of what is coming in to our homes to the visual, auditory and relational "gates".  It is critical what input our kids are getting.

Just a question for us as adults, "how careful are you to 'guard the gates' of your life?"  If we aren't people of integrity in our walk and talk our kids won't be either.  More is caught than taught and our kids will clearly see hypocrisy in our lives and homes.

How's it going?

What you say is true. Which is why the television almost never gets turned on in our house. My 5 year old has determined that "stupid" is a bad word, so those shows that use it, are off limits. I can't even watch Pawn Stars anymore because they said "what the hell" the other night.

I don't even really notice those words on TV..................and all we ever watch is History Channel or Animal Planet. We have our own little censor. Nothing gets past her.

PS- I checked into CR4 the other day, for the first time in months, and ended up getting banned for a week for fighting with the global warming crowd. Hope all is well.

Well, yeah, except "stupid" isn't a bad word at all, if it's used to illustrated something that's, um, stupid.

Our federal government recently granted $535 million in taxpayer-backed loans to a company called Solyndra, which was already in the hottest of hot water financially. The company went broke in less than a year, and took the taxpayers down with it. There is room for the word "stupid" in this story, and there's reason to use the word "stupid" to describe this sort of idiotic behavior.

Einstein famously defined insanity as being (and I paraphrase) doing the same thing over and over and expecting different outcomes each time. I think Einstein was actually referring to stupidity. Doing what he said doesn't mean you're insane, it means that you're stupid.

In these "PC" times, we're constantly being stripped of our negative comparison points. We're not supposed to have winners and losers. We're supposed to hand out certificates of accomplishment to... well, everybody, whether they accomplished anything or not. What used to be seen as "screwing up" is now supposed to be accepted and applauded as "participation." We're not allowed any more to say who won the game, and we're especially barred from saying who lost.

Can you see where the word "stupid" can be inserted in some of these situations? Can you see where the concept of stupidity shouldn't be abandoned until the actual fact of it disappears?

They still won't let me post.................probably forever.

The moderators are a bunch of young libs. As usual, politics are fine, as long as it agrees with their views. They didn't like me bringing up the carbon credit scam. The biggest financial scam in human history.

In the beginning? My Dad was an engineer, and was on there before he died. He also couldn't stand liberal BS.

I jumped on last time, because I wanted to talk about graphene, drank a few too many beers, and got sucked into the global warming crap. Always a mistake for me.

I can see the connection, graphene being carbon and the libs claim that AGW is Co2 (carbon) connected.
So you got suckered into the whole argument of stupid.
My friend, have you not learned yet, that when the conversation is over a libs head, they usually go with an emotional plea or call you a racist?

But for what it's worth, they are the losers, we got you and you're an asset to any forum.

Thanks Solar. Global warming belongs in a religious forum. It has nothing to do with engineering.

I know this is an old thread, but I can't help but comment. The song "Satan is My Motor" has NOTHING TO DO WITH WORSHIPPING SATAN. You are COMPLETELY MISSING THE POINT OF THE SONG!

The song is about the engine of a car being evil, because our love of automobiles is destroying our planet. It has to do with people thinking only highly of cars, and never understanding the evil they cause.

Every war we have gone to in the United States has been to secure oil as a resource. EVERY CONFLICT. EVERY TIME.

It's always been about BIG OIL. If you read the book 'Oil' by Matthew Yeomans, he talks about this. We send our young men and women to die so that oil tycoons can be rich. It's pretty much the stupidest thing, ever. And yet, most people lick it up like it's normal, and just keep driving their cars everyday. Driving isn't NORMAL.

WE SHOULD BE WALKING, OR BIKING. Driving is killing our planet... and yet most people give all their money to the oil gods, and don't even think twice. Jesus would be walking. Jesus wouldn't drive an S.U.V. Jesus would care about the environment. Especially since his father created it, right? Of course he would respect it. He wouldn't just drive all over the place, and go to war again when Oil resources got low.

The song is about considering how easy it is to have all the things we do, but at what cost? What is the trade off for having cars? If we destroy our planet, we will be left with nothing.

I don't understand how people with children can be so blind to damaging the environment. You are only making a problem for your kids down the road by not dealing with it, and leaving it for them to have to deal with later. It's not going to magically fix itself! It will take planting forests, and changing our energy use to renewables. Coal is poisoning the water in many states as we speak, and the GOP have made it clear that they are only interested in profit, so we can't expect that they will look out for the people and their children's welfare. It is up to us to demand better for our children.

Always make a point to follow the money, to see where things are heading. You will see people's true intentions.

One last note. Just because a word is being used doesn't mean it's being used how you think it is. Dig a little deeper into life. Seriously. How superficial can you be? If I use the word Patriot in a song, would you automatically think it's a Patriotic song? Come on. There is a lot more going on in life. Don't be such a simpleton. Use your brain WAKE UP to corporations who greedily take take take.

Come on guys, he's right, oil/cars put the buggy whip manufacturer out of business, livery stables used to be a hub for growing towns here in the west, coal powered trains were another industry to fall to oil.
One can no longer look across the horizon and see that romantic view of billowing black smoke and the mark it left on everything it touched.
Hell, oil even killed off the lucrative whaling industry, where men would board sail driven ships out to sea where it was man against monster for that precious blubber.
That was another industry to fall to the evils of oil, sailing ships, the majestic sea travel, man against the elements.

There was a time when man loaded up his family in a horse-drawn wagon with everything they could carry, whale oil barrel topped off, provisions secured and off they went, months, even years traveling the countryside, taking in all the land had to offer, but now, thanks to oil, man misses the "up close and personal" contact with our land, he no longer sees the world around him, no, he boards a plane and in hours he lands across the country. Damn that oil!

Damn that evil oil! Man is spoiled, food is no longer a family enterprise, where a family prized it's labor when it produced food from the earth, no, oil has replaced man's knowledge of working the land, he merely stops at a grocery store and buys the food he needs, never once considering how the food arrived at the store.

We need to turn to a time before drugs were derived from oil, when entire families suffered from plague, when it still took hours to find the only doctor for miles around.
We've lost the one thing that made man strong, disease, where God would cull the weak with plague and only the strong were able to procreate.

Damn that oil!!!

Oh, and never heard of the song you refer to.
