MINEOLA, N.Y. –  A Sikh college student says the U.S. Army is barring him from the Reserve Officer Training Corps unless he violates his religious beliefs by removing his turban, shaving and cutting his hair.

The Army announced in January it would allow Sikh troops to seek waivers on a case-by-case basis. But one of Iknoor (IHK'-nohr) Singh's attorneys says the policy is a Catch-22. She says the 19-year-old Hofstra University sophomore would have to first shave, cut his hair and remove his turban before seeking the waiver.

The group United Sikhs and the American Civil Liberties Union have filed a federal lawsuit in Washington, D.C., on behalf of Singh.

The problem this individual is facing is the fact that there are legitimate purposes for limiting the amount of hair a soldier is allowed. For instance, there is no way for a person with a full beard to acheive a proper seal of their protective mask in case of a chemical attack.  Similarly, the battle helmet will not fit properly, though there are ways of adjusting a full head of hair to accommodate a helmet, or women would also have to face buzz cuts.  But, I cannot see a turban fitting under a helmet.

In short, sometimes one must choose which is most important to them.  While I applaud the young man's willingness to serve, he needs to realize that sometimes two different choices are, because of basic realities, mutually exclusive.

You're right, I forgot all about that. I remember training in the gas chamber and anyone that hadn't shaved close enough, had to dry shave on the spot.
