So basically, its good for certain people to exist in Hell.  Going to Hell is better for them than going to heaven?

You are under the mistaken impression that God exists for us, when the truth is, we exist for God.  He gives us our whole lives to choose what is right in front of our noses, most will reject it and it will be to their detriment.

The idea that good people with wrong beliefs are going to be tortured forever is just about one of the worst beliefs I have ever heard.  How could a good God do such a thing?  I welcome the Popes change of heart.

But that doesn't mean that God has a change of heart. The Scriptures stand.

Hades (avoiding the censor) is the default destination for anyone who does not do anything to go to heaven.

People DO go to heaven. The earth is prepared first for the Jews after Armageddon.

The following people go to heaven:
- Children too young to understand
- People too incompetent to understand
- People who have never been exposed to the Scriptures are not held accountable
- Those with limited exposure are held responsible for only the light they have
- People who have repented their sins and accepted Jesus as their savior

The following people go to hades:
- Those who reject the salvation offer of Jesus
- Those who refuse to believe
- Those who actively teach against God
- Those who teach people to disobey God
- Those who have aligned themselves with satan
- Those who try to make believers disobey God
- Those who know about Jesus and still do nothing to try to go to heaven
