This is my favorite era for music. I was at UGA during this period and it was not unusual to have acts such as James Brown, Ike & Tina Turner, The Drifters, Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs and the like for fraternity parties. I was the social chairman for my fraternity a couple of years. One of my brothers was from Macon and was friends with Phil Walden who was just getting started as a promoter/manager of acts. We booked an act names Johnny Jenkins & The Pinetoppers. Phil called me and said he had just signed a new talent and would like to throw him in the show to give the kid some exposure. I agreed and the kid stole the show. It was Otis Redding. We lost him too soon. Phil later went on to manage some famous groups such as the Allman Brothers.
