Yeah, I heard about that.  Jeff Bridges is playing Rooster Cogburn, I believe.

I don't know about re-making True Grit.  That is definitely messing around with hallowed ground.

It's too bad that Hollywood is so full of brainless, uncreative twits, that all they can do is make movie versions of old TV shows, remakes of old movies, and politically motivated left-wing propaganda garbage.

We share a love of the Duke -- I'm not surprised! But I'll never hang his reputation on that one Academy Award.

John Wayne got his one and only Oscar for playing Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit." But he played better roles and turned in better performances -- MUCH better! -- before and after "True Grit." Even in the sequel -- "Rooster Cogburn and the Lady" -- he was a lot better, and his character was better developed. His survival of surgery to remove a lung and his return to the stage was most likely the cause of his award of the Best Actor Oscar for that dismal picture. The folks who vote for such things likely thought he'd be dead in another year.

Wayne deserved Oscars for his performances in "The Searchers," "They Were Expendable," "The Sea Chase," and most certainly for "The Cowboys," without a doubt the best Wayne picture ever. "The Shootist" was good, and star-laden, but too late in the man's career, and in his life. In "The Cowboys," you saw everything he ever was.

In "True Grit" he was saddled with inexperienced co-stars and a poorly developed script. Kim Darby was a nobody and Glen Campbell should have been run off the soundstage the very first day. The supporting cast of regulars like Strother Martin, John Doucette, Jeff Corey, and Dennis Hopper added depth, but could not save this turkey.

The story was OK. The cinematography was outstanding! The directing sucked. The decision to cast Glen Campbell as the Texas Ranger was suicide. Wait. The decision to allow Glen Campbell anywhere near this movie was suicide.

Of course, this is all IMHO....

Some pretty off-the-wall picks here. "The Tao of Steve?" "Straw Dogs" wasn't bad, but it sure wasn't that good. "Fight Club?" Really?

Sure! I did like "Fight Club"! Also read the book.  This is a list of "Favorite" movies, not my opinion of what the "Best" movies are. Most of these movies are favorites because of the memories they inspire, not because they are of any particular quality. Would I recommend these movies to others? Depends on the crowd.

If we were going for all time greatest films, I would probably not have many if any of my favorites list on it.  I would mention "The Cowboys" and "The Princess Bride", surely.

You're correct, it's about faves, not necessarily the "best." My bad.  ::)

This is why I can't pick out a top ten.  :'( I'd have to say my absolute favorite is Gone With The Wind; it's also my favorite book (next to my Bible). I adore old Westerns; the ones made today are just not the same somehow. Even my grandson knows who Matt Dillon and Paladin are. He can point out "the Duke" and Jimmy Stewart.

Once Upon A Time In The West ( I absolutely loved Henry Fonda's out of character performance)
Cheyenne Autumn
any Audie Murphy film
Adam's Rib
Twelve Angry Men (again, the original)
Be the kind of woman who, when your feet hit the floor in the morning, the Devil says "Oh crap, she's up".
