A 'priceless' historic guitar was destroyed in Quentin Tarantino's 'Hateful Eight'

Guitars should tread carefully on a Quentin Tarantino set.

A historic Martin guitar was reportedly smashed to bits on the set of the Hateful Eight during a scene between Kurt Russell and Jennifer Jason Leigh. Leigh's character, Daisy Domergue, plays the 1870s-era guitar and sings during one scene — but then Russell, still in character as John Ruth, grabs it and smashes it.

The irreplaceable instrument was on loan from Martin Guitar Museum, and the props team made six duplicates of it. After Leigh sang, the guitar was supposed to be switched out with a double — but that never happened, according to the movie's sound mixer, Mark Ulano.

"We were supposed to go up to that point, cut, and trade guitars and smash the double," he explained in a previous interview. "Well, somehow that didn't get communicated to Kurt, so when you see that happen on the frame, Jennifer's reaction is genuine."

Everyone on set was "pretty freaked out" after it happened, Ulano says, considering museum representatives said the guitar is "priceless."

"Tarantino was in a corner of the room with a funny curl on his lips, because he got something out of it with the performance," he says.

WTF? :glare:

Jump to the 3:30 mark, the song really sucks and isn't worth wasting your time on.

Why did the Museum it's self not have the Martin guitar under 24/7 surveillance?    After all it is Hollywood the playground of the rich and famous.
