A discussion I had recently:
I hate musicals. Life is not a musical. There is no singing in life. If you sing in public, you are weird, annoying, and need help.
I say the original "Grease" could be an ok movie without all the stupid singing. But all that singing makes it stupid.
However, I feel the original "Willy Wonka" should get a pass because it is fun and has a message.
Thoughts?
There is one musical I liked, that was the Music Man, the movie actually had a good plot as well as a moral message, beyond that, they're gay.
With that said, I did have leading roles in some theatrical renditions on stage, they are a total hoot, but honestly, you'd never get me to the theater to watch one, but that's just me.
Oh, and when I say gay, I mean 70% of the actors in the plays I did were gay, or yet to come out, or in total denial.
My step daughter had a roommate from the Tamil region of India and for a time got into Bollywood movies. I remember watching one with her of a couple of really bad gangs, murder, mayhem, blood, etc, but damn if at one point they didn't all get up and do a song and dance number! 95% of ALL movies from India MUST have a song and dance number no matter the plot!! I'm told that many actors can't sing worth a damn (but must dance) and will contract out for a singer to sing exclusively FOR them (dubbed) and if he/she is popular can make a very good living at it on par with the actor! I see Indian movies at my local theater now and Netflix also features a large selection. Family, singing and dancing in that order in nearly every movie. Have to admire their priorities...

I watch them occasionally, most are really campy, over the top acting, but that's fine, that's why I watch since I can't understand them, but you don't need to because of the actors' faces tell you all you need to know.
Many remind me of silent movie comedys.

Peters is funny and he's spot on in his descriptyion of Bollywood.
Till I saw his act a few years back, I thought to have the boom mike in the scene was somehow expected by the audience.
Seriously, I thought the director did it so as to keep the audience grounded and not get swept away in the fantasy.
I definitely don't like the genre, but there were dancing numbers from certain musicals that were true unforgettable masterpieces of art.

Got to adore Cyd Charisse.
