Title: How To Hold Wine Glasses
Post by: milos on May 05, 2018, 12:33:25 AM
I often see in the movies, that people who are supposed to be high class, hold wine glasses improperly, making them look like complete peasants instead, and that pisses me off so badly that I needed to start a topic. So, a wine or a Champagne glass is properly held by the stem, and never by the bowl, because you don't want to warm your wine with your hand.

So if I'm not mistaken, you're only breaking etiquette if you don't use the glass correctly?
Boy, I'm glad I never make this faupaux, I leave it in the bag and drink it, this has a two sided effect, one I don't look the fool in public, and Cops can't tell what you're doing.
All my wino friends have far more experience that these Suzy comelatelys, they have sucking down a bottle of wine to an art.

Truth is, I don't even like wine. My neighbor owns a vineyard and is always trying to give me wine, I just give it to someone else.

No, you are not only breaking the etiquette, but you are also warming your wine if holding the glass by the bowl. And this is the most critical with Champagne and white wine, which ought to be cooled when drinking.

But wine, and actually each alcoholic drink, is all about etiquette. You drink to give yourself a high class treat, and not to get drunk. And there is some etiquette for every alcoholic drink. For example, you never drink whiskey with ice, because it waters down the drink and ruins the taste, but the bottle should be cooled instead. But some people mix their drinks with ice, or pour some water into their wine, because they can't stand alcohol, and in that case they better not to drink at all.

Hope this little explanation helps.

I was being facetious. My neighbors that own the vineyard are Bay Area wine snobs and have no clue about this.
Personally, I don't care if someone mixes it with Koolaid, or pours it over ice cream, if someone is content with how they consume alcohol, that's their prerogative.
Wine, in my book, has three parts to play, first, and I believe most importantly, to clear the pallet. The second one covers a vast array of points from relaxing, to ceremonial, or having something to do with one's hands at a social gathering, plying another with the intention of lascivious goals in mind.
And thirdly. Everything else not covered where getting shit faced drunk is concerned.

But how one holds their liquor is up to the individual, be it by the body, the stem or the ears, in the end, it's really all up to the individuals' perquisite or prerequisite and enjoyment.

I know, your European heritage plays a huge part where wine is consumed and how one approaches it, but here in the US, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that cares.
Many families struggled with alcoholism at one point or another, so many families banned it from the home altogether. Entirely Different cultures.

So I take it drinking moonshine out of a jug is also out.

I'm just an old farm boy, drinking wine is like drinking vinegar.  In my drinking days  I enjoyed a single malt scotch whisky 18 years or older.

You may drink the wine the way you are pleased of course, but, but, but, there are certain norms of social behavior, I mean, I may grab a woman for her ass on the street, but that would be socially inappropriate, except if she likes it of course, so you understand what I mean. So, in the movies, there is no reason for actors to hold wine glasses inappropriately, except if the scene was intentionally meant to be inappropriate.

Look at what this hot dating coach from LA has to say, lol.

We used to call the paper bag the whiskey bottle came in a generic koozie. Yeah, those were the good old days.

Well you'll never get it if you hold your wine glass improperly. Anyway the blonde nailed it. I would rather consider such a classy woman for ideal wife, to educate our children and raise them with the proper manners.

Just to illustrate a bit what I meant with this topic.

This one looks like a scene of a broken marriage, we see a classy man with a wife who looks like a tramp for some reason.

They probably think they look cute.

No, Scarlett, you are not classy for drinking wine.

Well, this boy is very close to become classy.
