QuoteIn 2017, the 78 percent of veteran households were homeowners, 14 percentage points higher than for the total population. Active-duty servicemembers, who are mobile and often have housing provided on a military base, had a 43 percent homeownership rate, considerably lower than for veterans and the total population.

Because older people are more likely to be homeowners and because many veterans are older than 55, we calculate the homeownership rate for three age buckets: ages 18 to 34, ages 35 to 54, and ages 55 and older. For the youngest two age buckets, veteran households have the highest homeownership rate and active-duty servicemembers have the lowest. But for household heads ages 55 and older, active-duty servicemember households have the highest homeownership rate (87 percent). For all age buckets, the homeownership gaps between veteran households and the total population are between 5 and 10 percentage points, lower than the 14 percentage-point gap in figure 4, which did not consider age.

Figure 6 shows homeownership rates by race or ethnicity. For all five groups, veteran households have higher homeownership rates than the total population. The racial and ethnic homeownership gap is smaller for veteran households and active-duty military households compared with the total population. For example, the black-white homeownership gap is 30 percentage points for the total population but is 19 percentage points among veteran households and 11 percentage points among households with active-duty servicemembers.

The quickest and easiest way to a middle class life is joining the military. I've always thought that. My sister is about to retire in a couple of years at 40 years old and it makes me regret not going...

But at the same time I felt like joining the military was the easy way out in the sense that I knew I could make it in the real world...

What is being missed here, is not the gov benefits, but the character building that comes from having served.
I never used the VA loan to buy a home, the GI Bill for school became a total debacle, and the VA hospital system is a gamble at best.

No, the real benefit comes when applying for a job, not the MOS you were in, but the actual experience received that a kid can't get in real life on there own.
Employers recognize this, they know you understand hard work, chain of command/hierarchy, they know you matured beyond your years compared to kids your age straight out of college.

Yes, military experience puts you years ahead when applying for a job.

Please explain why you feel joining the military would be the easy way out? Obviously you are not a child of the Vietnam era.

Yeah, there is nothing easy about military service. The only difference in service and jail? You can relax in jail.

Definitely not. That was different. WWII most men were drafted. Vietnam many men were drafted too. Into terrible circumstances, I might add.

There's no draft now. and circumstances aren't terrible at all. It's a damn near fool-proof way to be middle-class in this country.

The numbers in the OP reflect that.

Fool proof? Try joining and see how easy it is to get in. They aren't taking just anyone anymore.

I would say he would move to Canada, before joining.   He does not know what the military life is all about. in this day and age.

It's a bitch no matter how you slice it. Say good bye to privacy for starters, then get ready to be told when to sleep, eat and take a crap.

What about the other perks? Back in the day, being assigned to Germany, Japan, UK, Italy, etc. was a treat in itself. Food, culture, etc. was an experience to enjoy. You had your family/spouse.

As a kid, we were in Germany. Home of the real Bratwurst. No Johnsonville's for us. The real thing. Eating at the gasthaus. Having Knodel. Bavarian music (well, that got annoying). But you get the picture.

I would not trade that for anything.
With all these lawyers with cameras on the street i'm shocked we have so much crime in the world.

It's why I love the Asian culture, they are truly wonderful people. Another reason I am not a racist, we're essentially all the same at heart.

I spent a year in Germany with my sister and her husband (who was Air Force).  I was 17/18 and had a wonderful time.  I love true bratwurst and I miss brotchen...  Toy

One of the last times I went to Germany, we were buying a few things from the commissary. I remember pointing it out to my mom when we spotted the pack of Johnsonville in the freezer section.

We were like, "WHY! We are in the home of the bratwurst. Why would you sell yourself short?". You can get it fresh and better from the local Metzgerei.

We were off base living in a small town (Stadkyll) and there was a "fast food"  trailer where I would buy bratwurst on brotchen and pommes frites.  Toy
