Moving to the US - is it worth it?

American Loving Norwegian

Ok so some people have probably noticed me posting here. Im a Norwegian living in Norway with my two children and my American husband. Life here isnt great for us, like we manage, but thats it. No great job opportunities for my husband and he is miserable here cause everything is so expensive, so we never eat out, never do anything fun really, and also he hates his job (which I can understand, he has an MBA which gave him plenty of opportunities in the US, here he is stuck doing dishwashing at a restaurant doing 8-11 hour shifts no break and not that great pay). He is a veteran so he actually has to pay more for healthcare here for himself than back home in the US. Also people here are really rude towards Americans and talk shit about America the first time someone says they are American. He has worn his MAGA hat  here too, oh my... he has gotten physically attacked over that, in front of me and the children nonetheless. You really arent allowed to have "different" opinions here. In one of his social science BS classes he has to take to become a permanent resident here they taught how you have to be pro abortion in Norway... Disgusting. Our taxmoney funds abortions directly.  Also our housing prices are legit INSANE. Where there is affordable housing there are NO jobs . Cars cost on average 700 dollars a month, so moving somewhere more affordable and driving is not really a good option. And that is excluding parking costs.

Ive been to the US about three times, all times North Carolina and Tennessee. Although technically Ive been to Chicago since I got stuck there overnight cause of issues with my flight, but I was adviced to just stay in my hotel room since the area was shady (all the windows were locked "per local code " xD). I wanted to go buy food across the street but the people in the hotel were like no, stay here and order in its late.  Also the cold wind made it feel about 10 degrees colder than it actually was (but coming from Norway I was dressed for it since I came from Norway though. But other than Chicago I loved America, or at least the south. Friendly people, affordable food and housing. The weather is also pretty great in the South. I got the sense that you were "allowed" to have your own opinions to a larger degree. Here you can actually get arrested for calling someone the N word. Now I dont like that word, but should you e arrested for using it? No.  Also in the US you are actually allowed to protect yourself. Here you cant even carry pepperspray.

The biggest issue with the US is possibly high health insurance cost, but we will be making so much more money in the US I dont think it will be a problem really? My husband gets free healthcare through the VA. My children are American so we could just buy healthinsurance for them I guess. How does it work for foreigners though? How long does it take to become an American citizen if you are living in the US with your American spouse? and how are your healthcare options before that time?

Do you think its worth moving to the US over the reasons I listed? We would be leaving family behind, which is sad. My oldest son has lived here for 5 years. His English isnt great since we speak a lot of Norwegian, but he understands a good bit. Another BIG reason for moving to the US is avaliability of Medication that we need, Norway might reject medication that is avaliable in the US that would make a big difference for my youngest sons health. Ive looked around and people pay 350-1000 dollars in health insurance with similar health issues that my son has. It should be managable with both of us being educated? My husband was making around 50 000 before he left. I hear nurses make like 60 000 with opportunities for making even more?

We have family we can stay with while we get settled and can save money for a house in not too much time either since we wont have to pay for rent for a certain period of time. Unlike in Norway you can live in a house even if you dont have that much money, a foreign concept to me, so there is space for us in their house. Here people pay 200 000 dollars for a tiny apartment. People here have to get help from their parents to buy a house

You bet is is worth it! You cannot go wrong with NC or TN, but in the right location. Your husband should not have any difficulty finding a job. As for healthcare for your family, it will probably be fine as your taxes will be so much less.

As for citizenship I cannot answer as I am not an expert. However, I believe with your husband being an American citizen, you and your children may automatically be granted citizenship.

One important thing in closing this short answer. Research locations in NC or TN. There are some liberal enclaves you would want to avoid. I personally live in western NC and it is wonderful.

Thanks for your reply. My children already have citizenship, we sent paperwork from the embassy. My husband loves his country enough to make sure of that. I just hope the liberals dont Try to make America into europe. But as I understand it the democrats Are fractured and Trump stands a good chance of winning in 2020?

Rule #1 - don't believe 99% of what you see or hear on the network news.  They are ALL nothing but propaganda sock puppet theaters anymore.  That includes FOX News, perhaps only to a slightly lesser extent.

Rule #2 - Ask a lot of questions before settling down here.  We have good, conservative regions of the country.  We also have stinking cesspools of Socialism such as Berkeley, CA., Santa Monica, CA., San Francisco, CA., ... basically ALL OF CALIFORNIA.  Also, there are a lot of small towns like Austin, TX. that are little microcosms of Socialism.  Nearly all of the BIG cities are hopelessly infested with liberals and they all march in lock step to liberal-think.

Rule #3 - America is NOT a "hotbed of gun violence" as the Left would have you believe.  (See Rule #1)  Stay out of any city run by Democrats.

Rule #4 - You are FREE to be as successful as you wish, driven by your own efforts and your own limitations.  You are also free to sleep under a bridge if you choose that fate.  You are free to succeed, and you are free to fail.

Rule #5 - When "it" hits the fan, America will be the country to be in.  Our conservative citizens are more heavily armed, better prepared and generally more capable than the citizens of any other country, including Norway.

It is fine to stay with friends temporarily, but DO NOT allow their chosen location to determine where YOU "settle" to live your new life in America.  I lived in that stinking cesspool of Socialism called "COMMIEfornia" for 40 years.  I am now settled in western Kentucky, and I absolutely love it!

Health care isn't he boogy man the left makes it out to be. You can see a private doctor cheap instead of buying into a costly insurance plan.
Then there's always the VA, depending on his rating, you may have a lot more in benefits.

Be sure and talk to a Vet representative at the hospital, they know a lot more than your County Vet Rep, take my word for it.

I have no idea why you aren't already here.  I live in the western Piedmont of North Cackalacky(Colloquial for Carolina).  Moved here from the Left Coast 32 years ago.  We used to live in Charlotte, but as some have said, it became a Liberal Hotbed.  So, we moved to Lincoln County.
I pay $514 a month for my Mortgage.  6 year old 3 BR 2 Ba house 1400 square feet on 2.8 acres, and that includes Property taxes and Home Owners Insurance.  My neighbors are at least 400 feet away.  Very Conservative Area.
You'd love it here.  Just avoid the University Cities.  Raleigh, Asheville, Greensboro, Charlotte, Winston Salem, just to mention the worst.
Come see us.

My husband would know which places to avoid. His hometown is pretty conversative, but there Are still Jobs close by. And Ive been to Ashville , IT was like being back Home. Even saw people in hijabs lol... And the service in bars were just AS terrible, so were the prices (of like pretty much everything houses, beer etc, they had some fancy overpriced beers in the bar we went to. Very pretty area, too bad about the people . We went to Tennessee shortly after. Liked IT better there xD

And as far as I understand it the places with the gun violence Are run by democrats Are they not? And dont most mass shootings happen in gun free zones? And Are not states that have concealed Carry more safe?  I read a book ny Dana Loech on this. Hands off my gun I believe Its called

Kentucky_Conservative

We  could enter into a VERY long discussion when referring to "mass shootings" in America, because there is ample evidence that virtually all of these shootings are staged for the purpose of making the gun problem SEEM much larger than it is.  I will not go into it here, but suffice it to say, I have researched many of these "mass shootings" and I am content in my conclusion that they are fake.

I cannot possibly go into detail in a forum like this, because of the VOLUMES of posts that would be required to show you the evidence.   Besides, it has been said that

"A man, convinced against his will, is of the same opinion still" - unknown

This means, if YOU have decided that the MSM told you the truth about all of these mass shootings, then nothing I can present  to you will open your eyes to the real truth.

Just know that if you saw it on TV, that does NOT mean it was REAL.  The networks are nothing but sock puppet propaganda theaters that will lie through their teeth for RATINGS.

Right on target about NC. We are in Hendersonville about 25 miles south of Asheville but in a different county. However, it is on a different planet from Asheville.

Thanks for the offer, if we settle down in America we will likely go to North Carolina for a while to stay with family and save some money, so that would be our starting point.

And yes  I like all those things, except alcohol. I dont really drink that much (Ill have a few beers but thats about it), my husband would totally have some though. I could bring some pies to, I love making pies (a little too much haha), lemon meringue pie, pumpkin pie, sweet potatoe pie, key lime pie, apple pie <3

Believe me, alcohol consumption is not required, but it is encouraged.  We'll have Beer available.  In fact, we make some pretty mean Virgin drinks.
My wife is an Apple Pie ala Mode fanatic.  I am a Pecan Pie kinda guy.  However, I never met a slice of pie, I wouldn't eat.  Sweet Potato pie is Da Bomb.  MOAB Style.  And my wife's Banana Pudding puts all others I have tried, to shame.
Holler when you are coming and we'll set the table.  Good Luck.
