Robert Weinstein did direct one film back in his early career. Under Miramax and then Dimension and also under their joint title, he and his brother Harvey DID produce a number of films on their own which got distributed by other outfits. It's quite common for the independent studios. Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino both went with similar funding/distribution deals. It's a very strange business.
